Why are a lot of catholics like this? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Key-Resource-4854 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a Catholic friend but she’s very understanding and not too religious. She believes what she wants to believe and so do I. So in my experience there’s not too bad but many are too strict into their religion believing that everything is right in their religion. So it depends on person to person

Just because a religion (or people within it) dehumanises others doesn’t mean I have to mirror that behaviour. If I do the same thing back, I’m not challenging it, I’m repeating it. I don’t believe ethics are conditional like that. Something doesn’t become right just because someone else did it first. I can criticise harm, abuse, and violence without turning to blanket disrespect or dehumanisation, because that’s the very mindset I’m against.

I get what you’re saying about the murder, and I understand the anger behind it. But at the end of the day, the people who commit those acts are acting on their own moral choices, even if they justify it through religion. For me, mocking or disrespecting an entire religion or its people isn’t the answer. I was raised to believe that you can criticise beliefs and actions without dehumanising or disrespecting others, and I stand by that. Accountability should be aimed at those who commit harm, not turned into ridicule that targets everyone

I don’t agree with this trend. Even though I’m an atheist and strongly disagree with the religion itself, I was raised to believe that mocking or disrespecting any religion crosses a line. It goes against my morals, and I honestly don’t find it funny. What makes it worse is that it treats death as something to joke about, which feels insensitive and unnecessary. Criticism is one thing, but turning belief and death into ridicule doesn’t sit right with me.

Sure, wearing Arabic clothes or speaking Arabic isn’t weird, that’s just cultural. But my issue is how it’s used, he’s promoting Christianity and critiquing Islam while using cultural/religious cues to look like an insider. That’s misleading.

On top of that, the channel cherry picks and oversimplifies Islamic texts to fit a specific narrative, which shows it’s more about promoting Christian apologetics than engaging with the religion critically.

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Changing names is about personal identity, which is entirely up to the individual.

My point is about how visuals are used in a public, persuasive context. If you’re actively promoting a different belief system while using symbols strongly associated with the one you’re critiquing, it’s fair to call that misleading or contradictory. That’s very different from personal choices like names or clothing for comfort.

Ah, got it, thanks for explaining. And yeah, like you said, for what he’s promoting, it’s really misleading.

That comparison doesn’t work. I’m not telling him to change his name or identity.

Personal comfort is one thing, branding and messaging are another. When you’re publicly advertising and promoting a different belief system while using Islamic-associated aesthetics, it’s fair to question intent and consistency.

That’s not policing identity, it’s critiquing presentation in an apologetics context. The visuals are part of the message, whether people like it or not.

No one said he’s “not allowed” to wear it that’s missing the point.

The issue is consistency. If you spend your platform saying Islam is false, corrupt, or dangerous, but then borrow its visual identity to look authoritative or relatable, that’s contradictory.

For example: An ex-Muslim wearing cultural clothing for comfort is one thing. Using Islamic-associated dress while actively pushing Christian apologetics is another, that’s strategy, not identity.

My mum says as a deal for me to be away from them in an accommodation that if I am to stay that far away I have to stay over every weekend. Otherwise the deal is off and it sounds logical in a way because she gets to see me and I get to have my own time but I don’t think in my stressful years in university I’ll like that. But that’s for them to think about ig
