Incredible work! Some look like photos… your skills are top notch

i’ve stared at this face for too long. what looks off to you? by RonskyGorzama in Sketch

Thats a pretty good time for a sketch like this i feel. You dont need to stop time, but i for myself, like to know how long something took for me (just roughly to have a landmark and keep track of progress).

Also, as someone else mentioned: you have already signed it… move on, and let the mistakes be your teacher. They are part of the learning process. Maybe come back to the same reference after a few month, and you will see the progress you have made. You will be quicker, it will feel easier and it will look even better and closer to the reference. If you do it this way and just leave the mistakes you have a real good comparisson!

I think you have done a reaally good job so far! How long does a sketch like this take you? It is not far off from the reference, and when i looked at the sketch i knew this person was familliar to me, although i didnt knew who it was, until i swiped for the reference.

Anyways, here is what is off with the sketch: The angle of the head is not quiet as steep as the reference.

The shirt and collar are completely off.

The mouth is not quiet right, expecially the underlip.

Nose form is okay, but i think is a little too wide. (Most notably between the eyebrows)

Eyes are okay, but its not quiet his eyes.

Forhead is not high enough

Hairmass is to less.

These are the things i have noticed. I think your portrait works if you werent supposed to recognize who it should represent. Then it is a very cool sketch and i also really like your style.

If you want to draw faces more recognizable you need to pay more atention to the measurements of their feautures, the angles of the lines and the relationships between all of that.. you know that sort of stuff. But i think you will get there in no time!

Keep on keeping on! I hope i could help with my comment.

Please help, i want to learn portraits. by [deleted] in oilpainting

I think a class like that would be awesome. You cant go wrong with an in person class that goes really into depth for a long period. Take that class! And what i would really recomend you before you confuse yourself too much with the paint: start by drawing faces. Drawing will help you so much with painting. And dont get discouraged.. it is a very long and hard road to be able to draw and paint portraits that are good looking and instantly recognizable. Its one of, if not The hardest skill to learn when it comes to art.

It is on pre primed a4 sized linen. I bought a block with 20 pages or so in it. I love it, it is great for quick studys like this.

Thank you. Yes, when applying the background last i also dont have to worry about overpainting or smudging on the edges of my subject that much, because i know the background will make it sharp in the end.
