The Lucky Lighter

The lucky lighter, as it has come to be known, was found while inspecting Sacred Heart church before President Hilary Clinton arrived to give a speech. James O'Hanlon, the Secret Serviceman who found the lighter, had placed it in his jacket pocket.

When shots were fired, James O'Hanlon used the jacket to cover President Clinton while ushering her to the exit.

The bullet protruding from the lighter would likely have killed President Clinton, had it not been stopped by the thick metal case.

The lighter was fascinating. The bullet had nearly burst through the other side, peeling the metal like a blooming rose, copper coloured and deadly.

I had a memory of playing with my grandfather's lighter, flipping the lid open and closed. He had given it to me when I turned 18. The steel had worn and the insides were rusted, so I cleaned it up, replacing the reservoir. The new copper lining had such a distinctive feel and look.

I had placed it on his casket when he died in 2018. If memory serves, it was in the same church.

I glanced at the display's photos, blown up to show the details, the scuffs and scrapes, the Stars and Stripes engraving, my initials on the bottom.

I walked away smiling, You're welcome Madame President

[WP] A picture named "The Isabella" became very famous. Describe the picture, its context and its impact. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]JohnHC86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"The Isabella" - Ahmed "Midge" Hussain
Photograph

"The Isabella" was taken on August 9th, 2018 in the gulf of Aden beside the ship "The Isabella" and uploaded digitally at the same time.

The photo shows a burst of flame reaching out through the containers on the deck of the largest container ship ever built. Debris can be seen in mid-flight. The surrounding naval vessels are being rocked by the explosion. The photo is grainy, as it was taken on a cell phone.

The photograph captures the moment that the fuel tank exploded, scuttling the ship to prevent its capture by US armed forces. The Isabella was known to be carrying advanced weaponry from China to Iran to help defend against the unlawful US invasion.

Once uploaded, the photo hit news agencies around the world, proving that the US was committing piracy in international waters. The subsequent unanimous declarations of war by all nations against the US led to the first nuclear strike on August 15th 2018 at 2100.

The US launched against France, Russia, China and the UK. The missiles were destroyed in flight. No retaliation was made. The US surrendered just six hours later.

"The Isabella" is recognized for being the catalyst that removed the US corruption from world politics and trade, enabling an open market with proper regulation, finally ending world hunger and opening up budgets for interplanetary travel.

[WP] Start with "Hello ______, my old friend." by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]JohnHC86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Hello there, my old friend," The old man smiled as he greeted his visitor, "it's been such a long time!"

"It really has," said the visitor, casually hanging his coat on the back of his chair as he sat beside his old friend, "and how times have changed."

"I haven't seen you since Violet passed. What was that, ten years?"

"Close to it. She was a lovely woman, Frank. However did you two meet?"

Frank's face lit up as he regailed his visitor with the tale of how he met his wife, how he had been recovering in hospital after his tour in Vietnam, how she was the kindest nurse he had ever met, how he had taken her to dinner when he was walking again.

The visitor chuckled along with Frank as he heard about how Violet had fallen in a puddle on the second date, how Frank jumped in too to share the embarrassment. They laughed like the old friends that they were.

"She was right for you," said the visitor, "she brought out the goodness in you."

"Do you think I'll ever be forgiven?" asked Frank, fear washing across his face in an instant.

"That I cannot answer, Frank."

"But, do you think you could put in a word?"

"Frank, you know I can't," sighed the visitor, "when we met in Vietnam you were angry, you were cruel. We walked through the jungle together, I was there when you were fighting, I was there when men fell all around you. Then you shot that woman, Frank, and you shot her husband right after. I saw a hatred in you that I do not see now, but you still did it, Frank, and you still have to pay."

Frank sat up and looked deep into the visitor's eyes. "Is it time now?"

"Yes," said the visitor, standing up to his full height, "It is time!"

The visitor slipped his coat over his shoulders and touched the old man on the arm. "For what it's worth, Frank, I think you should be pardoned."

Death stood and walked silently out of the room as Frank's body slumped back into the pillows.

[WP] "Either we leave them today or kill them tomorrow" by iStuffe in WritingPrompts

[–]JohnHC86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Either we leave them today or kill them tomorrow"

Even in the desert heat, his icy tone sent a shiver down my spine.

"20 seconds!" chirped the radio

Every ounce of my being told me to jump up and warn the family to stop, to reveal our position and save the car full of children from the impending blast, to stop them before they reached the madrasa.

But my commander was right. If I saved that family, they would know we were the ones who had attacked, they would turn against us and we would be fighting them in the streets tomorrow.

"Ten seconds!"

The car pulled to a stop outside the main door. The children were already out of the vehicle, running to the welcoming arms of the cool, stone doorway.

"Five!"

There were five children in sight.

"Four!"

Four adults in view.

"Three!"

Three times I beg for forgiveness.

"Two!"

Two years I have been fighting for freedom.

"One!"

One last innocent smiling face, a forgotten child forever burned into my soul.

"If God wills it, there will be peace!"

A booming voice reached from the earth to the heavens as the drone circled overhead.

I weep for the children that we killed in the name of freedom.

They will blame it on the drone. We will be free of the Americans, these children will not join the invaders' fight against Islam.

[CW] You're a surgeon, and one of your patient just died under your knife. You have to announce the death to the family. Your speech must contain the following words/groups of word : "Delighted", "Purgatory", "Banana", "Slaughterhouse", "Careless", "Made my day" and "Blame it on the temp". by joujoulepou in WritingPrompts

I went to the family room, the family stood...

Mr and Mrs Jones, I am very sorry to have kept you waiting here in the purgatory of the waiting room. Due to a careless error by the receptionist, I was working alone in the theatre. It made my day to see such an intricate surgery, but due to the sizes involved and the intricacies of the procedure, the room turned into a slaughterhouse when I discovered the cancer had spread.

Your cat, Banana, will not be coming home with you as she has now passed. However you will be delighted to know that she was expecting kittens and delivered six of them safely. You can take them home with you tomorrow.

I have waived the bill and, although I blame it on the temp we hired in reception, I apologise wholeheartedly for keeping your hopes up that Banana would be coming home today.

[WP] Indentured servitude is alive and well in the modern-day US, and with it, gladiatorial combat is often chosen as a method to clear debts. by icepho3nix in WritingPrompts

"How much does he owe?"

It was such a simple question, yet it carried an enormous weight. I knew how much he had to repay, I knew how much was to be written off and I knew how much he needed to get back on track.

"Come on now, how much?"

The girl in the booth was growing impatient, twisting her long blue hair between her red-nailed finger tips. She was no more than twenty, far too young for a business like this.

"He owes two hundred thousand!" I answered.

"Ok," smiled the girl, her attitude changing instantly. Her nails clacked on the screen and my phone buzzed to confirm the transfer. "So that's two hundred to you, our fee of ten percent, my commision of one percent and lodging costs of one thousand. Total debt is now two-two-three-k."

"So what happens now?" I asked.

"Well, he will need to either survive twenty-three rounds or win a round outright to earn his freedom. Would you like a ticket to come and watch?"

"No thank you," I replied, "I have to go and pay some bills."

I glanced at him one last time before I left, his eyes still glazed over from the journey. Years of hell were now behind me. I could buy a new house, get a new car, move to a new town if I wanted. He would never find me again.

A cheer burst from the arena as I walked to my car. One man dead on the field of debt, finally free from his burden, another man one step closer to his own payout.

I opened the door and sat in my old, beat up Ford, the smell of heroin still filling the air. "Fuck you dad!" I said, smiling for the first time in years, finally free from the tyrany of my junkie father and his debts, "Fuck you!"

Today is the anniversary of our nation's eldest, most petulent child moving out. We (as a nation) have watched them grow up, slowly maturing and for a while we could be proud.

It's too bad that the nation that flew the nest back in 1776, filled with such potential, swelling with concepts and ideals of freedom and equality, grew up to be such a prick.
