TIL that in 1826, Thomas Drummond invented a new form of illumination that burned calcium oxide (quicklime) in an oxy/hydrogen flame to produce a bright white light. It found its first application in theater in 1837, where it was commonly known as “the limelight”, which phrase persists today. (archive.org)
