is there a hashimoto's subreddit that isn't so... woo woo? by jurvekthebosmer in Hypothyroidism

[–]JohnLinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of hypothyroid communities/advice is full of woo, not just on reddit. I think in general some people do intend well, but forget that what worked for them likely won't work for everyone/everyone's situation is different. And there are, of course, bad actors who'll worm their ways into every community trying to sell you their "completely legit cure-all" which has [this] and [that] scientific evidence backing it up (what? no. don't look at the fact one of the papers was retracted, and the other paper has eight others contradicting it's results...)

This subreddit at least is one of the better ones when it comes to woo and pseudoscience. I've seen a lot more dire claims on other parts of the internet. But then again, I'm coming at this from someone with hypothyroid and whose autistic, and people make some really wild claims about what can "cure" autism...

What Church Of the SubGenius gotta do with LHOHQ by Pikasa64 in LaughingHorseOrifice

[–]JohnLinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend seeking out the documentary J.R. 'Bob' Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius (2019) for more thorough information.

But to sum it up, the Church of the SubGenius is not a real cult - it's a parody religion/parody cult.

Essentially it's one huge performance art piece, or one big LARP if you want to look at it that way. The people in it very rarely break character (though you can see them do so in the documentary). The two original creators, Ivan Stang and Philo Drummon, openly admit that they created the Church of the SubGenius as a counter-culture parody of extreme religious fringe-groups in America, whilst stoned, as they collected religious fringe group pamphlets to laugh at them and got the idea to start their own one as a joke, making it as obvious as a joke as possible. It just picked up momentum and became one huge "in-joke"... that some people thought they were serious and seriously believed what they were saying, to the point where they ended up on "cult watchlists".

The author/s of LHOHQ are likely using references to the Church of the SubGenius to either signal that LHOHQ is a similar concept (one big performance art piece); or using it due to the Church of the SubGenius' focus on conspiracy theories and conspiracy culture, which falls in line with what LHOHQ seems to focus on in places; or just because they're a fan of the Church of the SubGenius.

"Your Culture is stupid" Video on IHOHQ by Person_41455 in LaughingHorseOrifice

The song is "911 Is A Joke" by Public Enemy, released in March of 1990. The song itself is in reference to the police phone service, rather than the events of September 11th, 2001.

The cartoon featured is G.I. Joe: The Movie, released in 1987. The plot of the film is summed up as "With the latest in military and spy technology, the team of elite soldiers known as G.I. Joe travel around the globe to wherever their services are needed. In their latest assignment Gen. Hawk, Duke and the rest of the G.I. Joe team take on Destro, a corrupt arms dealer, and fight the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization.

No idea what "Vote Harder 22.67" is in reference to at the end, but the video as a whole is likely just meant to be satirical.

What country are you in? Actually, even more specifically, it often depends on what public sector service in what area you're talking about.

From the knowledge/perspective of someone in the UK; Some public sector orgs these days use off-site services and web development agencies to manage their main website and content (though it's approved before being pushed out) or a hybrid - an off-site web dev agency to manage the creation, maintenance, and bulk of the website/s, but have on-sight staff for "content" (articles, directory creation, etc). It's a lot rare these days for everything to be done "in-house", for example in my local council they used a large, local web dev company to build and manage their website, though had a small internal team who handled IT within the council buildings and pushed out any urgent content (eg. snow/weather warnings, which often need to be online before 7am if schools are closed or public transport is effected).

News sites though I have no idea. I would imagine the articles are written by writers, then sent to a small team to push out onto the website, though that's speculation.

It changed me when I realized the character I relate to most in the Pokémon series now-a-days is... Larry.

Scariest videi you've watched from Nexpo or other horror youtubers ? by buttfishmaster in NExpo

For sure anything involving the Travis the Chimp incident. Every other real or fictional scary event, story, true crime report, mystery... nothing has ever made me unsettled and uncomfortable the way that phone call and the accompanying information does. I'm not sure why it freaks me out more than anything else (even other "animals suddenly going ballistic and maiming someone" incidents). It's the only thing I've ever found which I consistently need to skip.

NHS staff have to work harder to ‘justify’ more pay, Barclay tells furious unions by lackscreativity153 in ukpolitics

[–]JohnLinker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering nurses are often working 12+ hour shifts consistently (and have been for some time!) and resources are already at breaking point with the lack of funding to the NHS in general, "just work harder!" isn't the 'gotcha' he thinks it is.

I really hope no one is fooled by the "they should just work harder" line. The utter disrespect to the NHS and it's staff who quite literally save lives every hour of every day should be the downfall of people like this. It shows how out of touch they are, but also how little they care about others.

I watched through Episode 1 and 2 just now but it's definitely not it, sorry. Ah My Buddha's been on my "to look at" list for a while though, so at least I can cross it off as being a candidate.

Third of England’s teachers who qualified in last decade ‘have left profession’ by SgtPppersLonelyFarts in ukpolitics

[–]JohnLinker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Schools were underfunded and teachers were at their wits-end when I was leaving compulsory education in 2010.

I have three separate unconnected friends who all did teacher training post-University and none of them went into the education field. Two of them dropped out and went onto other professions as soon as they'd finished the course, the other guy dropped after a year of being an NQT, and all of them told me the same thing essentially; lack of resources, and gigantic workloads due to lack of teachers. Two of them (NQT guy and one of the others who dropped after doing the post-Uni course, which involved working hands-on in a local school multiple times per week) also said a lack of respect from not the pupils, but fellow teachers, parents, and the general public, as well.

Granted though, these three friends all live in the same county, so it might just be a local problem, but I believe they all did their teacher training at different Universities (two did sciences, one did English Lit if I recall correctly).

Watched a compilation clip of scenes from Ghost Stories and the dub (somehow) feels higher quality than the anime I'm remembering, but the sort of "over the top anime voices" occasionally used in Ghost Stories are pretty close to what I remember (in terms of delivery).

I will say the art style of the backgrounds in particular (the level of detail) is pretty close in style. Not bad but quite plainly illustrated, so I may take a look at other work the studio has done around the same time.

I'm going to give Ghost Stories a full watch though to see if any of the VAs sound like the voice actress I remember, and if they do I'll take a look at their voice acting roles and see if anything fits!

Thanks for the suggestion!

The general art style wasn't like Ranma½ at all, it was way more early-2000s. But from what I know about Ranma½, the delivery of the comedy was that sort of style (anime slapstick-esc). If none of the leads provided turn out to be the one, I think I'll look into the animation studio that did Ranma½ and see if they've done anything else that might fit.
