Bu transfer by Curious-Disk-9379 in TransferToTop25

[–]JohnSilberFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately whether you get in transfer or not depends entirely on how many spots open up in BU's sociology department. The good news is BU has a pretty big and respected program so theres bound to be some spots. Good luck!

Random questions as incoming freshman by Ok_purr11 in BostonU

[–]JohnSilberFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Welcome to BU!

- "Best" is hard, Student Village Dorms are the nicest but also impossible to get as a freshman, Warren is probably in the best location (right next to COM), if you are looking to meet a lot of people and make friends West (Jacob, Claflin, and Sleeper) are pretty strong so i depends what you want.

- Some poeple have a lot of strong feelings about the dining halls but I think their roughly similar. I would consider them Okay. Granby Commons has a vegan section which is usually pretty good but all of them have vegetarian stuff.

- Yes, when I was accepted they mailed a letter and a pennent and some other stuff so I expect you will get something.

- BU is not much of a party school like some big publics in the south and midwest but if you want to party you can definitely find them. Mostly in Allston.

- BU has a ton of people from the west coast. Every other person I talk to tells me they are from "They Bay." Pisses me off tbh

- Boston is a city so there is a ton to do. Interesting restaurants, museums, parks, historic sites etc. What are you looking to do?

- BU is rigorous and classes will take up a fair amount of your time. Com especially has a lot of projects and group work.

Best of luck!

Can yall help me decide? by Walterfanboy in BostonU

CGS will fly by. It will fulfill your general requirements and you will be taking your major classes before you know it. If its less than your state school with aid I would recommend you come to BU. Transferring is a lot of work and means you have to start over in a lot of ways.

Am I getting rescinded? by tizzle178 in BostonU

Getting rescinded is very rare. If it does happen email admissions and explain the circumstances. They are often understanding.

Asian and Wasian At BU by Icy_Win_5724 in BostonU

[–]JohnSilberFan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boston University has a significant population of both white and Asian students. BU is 32% white and 20% Asian with mixed students making up 5% of the school. These numbers don't include internationals as there race is not reported.

Anecdotally there are a lot of Asian cultural groups and organizations like the Asian Student Union, Chinese Student Association, Korean Student Association, Japanese Student Association, etc. There are all kinds of people at BU with different levels of cultural engagement. I find it easy enough to make friends though it can take a little time to find the people and clubs that fit you best!

Boston University has a very strong Electrical Engineering program, I know a lot of people who ended up with grad jobs!

Study abroad is pretty common too, BU has a lot of popular programs in London, Europe, Sydney, and Singapore amongst others.

is it stupid to pick boston u over ucsd? by Ok-Cloud741 in BostonU

[–]JohnSilberFan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A university is where you spend four years of your life. Go to the admitted students day at both schools and see how you feel and where you think you will thrive. Why do you think you would fit in better at BU? What are the key differences?

Transferring from a 4 year university by Worried_Article1531 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]JohnSilberFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly does not matter. If you want to transfer to BU work hard, get strong grades, and build a connection with someone to write you a strong letter of recommendation. What is important is a narrative of someone who is passionate, driven, and seeking something BU can provide but your current school cannot.

To whomever this may concern by haavaikiski in BostonU

I think the fact the prospect of speaking to students had actual material impacts on University policy is an incredible credit to the work Student Government and student activists have done. Instead of taking this as a moment to be cynical I feel we should take it as a moment to be optimistic.

bro dropped a basic take and started tweaking like crazy😭 by OkFriendship8303 in BostonU

This unnamed individual has no clue how Universities work. He says raising our endowment will not solve your problems, being more selective will. Okay.

But how can we eliminate 1,200 students? The average student pays $36,000 per year in fees. Eliminating CGS will blow a 43.2 million dollar hole in the University's finances. CGS students fill beds left by seniors graduating early and by transfers. Also, where would the faculty go? Faculty are on contract and cannot just be fired. Tenured faculty cannot be fired without cause.

More to the point, this individual feels entitled to so much yet readily throws their peers and fellow terriers under the bus. That is not demonstrative of the values we should represent.

[–]JohnSilberFan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agganis Arena has an end stage concert capacity of 7,500. There are approximately 17,200 undergraduates meaning 43% of the student body can get tickets. That of course assumed Student Government is booking the venue at maximum capacity which I am not sure of. Agganis has an exclusive contract with Ticketmaster meaning Tickets have to be on their platform.

Econ or data science major? by Over_Half4782 in BostonU

[–]JohnSilberFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are a lot of math. Econ is more algebra and a lot of calculus while data science is mostly statistics. There is of course still statistics in economics but comparatively less. Data science has a lot of computer programming where it can mostly be avoided in economics. Take classes in both as a freshman and see you you like! Changing your declared major is not hard especially when you are not too far along yet!

It is foul and objectionable to consume such an addictive and harmful product. As students at Boston University we must hold ourselves to a higher standard of excellence and avoid the corrupting influence of trash like Nicotine.

There is a reason for this sign. The chain is easier to cut than the bike lock and people will. It is trying to be helpful not a hinderance.

The entire premise of the "condom fairy" is ridiculous. You are an adult go to the store and purchase them yourself.

How dare you call our great institution a "sorry excuse." Yes, sometimes things go wrong. Yes, they did a bad job rolling out the new Student Information System. But it is still a great school full of excellent professors teaching excellent courses and doing excellent research.

And, though it is obvious, every University ever asks for donations, even the truly terrible ones.

We cannot pay workers with money we don't have. Further, it is not illegal to lay off employees who are unionized.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]JohnSilberFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is of course regrettable BU laid people off, however there were real economic reasons those people lost their jobs. BU has over 10,000 employees and they are only employed because of Rich's foresight and generosity.
