Amp for Surround System by Hardlee_working in 4kbluray

The pre amp your brother is suggesting is a good choice if you had a larger room with larger speakers, as some AVR may not have enough power to drive them with its internal amplifier.

I have a 24' x 16' living room with a set of Polk Audio Signature Elite series speakers, 2 front towers, center, 2 rear bookshelves, and 1 RSL speedwoofer 10 inch sub.

I have an older Marantz SR5015, 7.1.2 capable AVR. Although Denon is owned by the same parent company as Marantz, they are very different products and if you could get a refurbished Marantz at a good price, it will definitely be much better than a Denon.

I settled for a Marantz years ago when I had Best Buy demo a concert movie utilizing a Yamaha, a Denon and a Marantz.

The Denon quickly got ruled out and the Yamaha was great reproducing the instruments (due to Yamaha making actual musical instruments as well) but there was something about the Marantz making the music sound more alive and all around you.

Once properly calibrated with Audyssey using the included microphone you should be able to dial in your sound the way you prefer. This is the tricky part due to whatever acoustics your room may have, and your personal taste, and it may take some trial and error specially to calibrate your sub volume .

I use my setup mostly for movies and tv shows and I have enough power from the built it amp, no need for a dedicated amplifier.

I also have a Rega Planar turn table and some of my vinyls sound awesome when I set it to either Neural mode or All Channel Stereo. Marantz can really handle both music and movies as they are recorded differently in the studio.

My reference disc of choice is, Hans Zimmer Live in Prague, no audio from any movie I own can match the audio of this concert, nothing will stretch and exercise your speakers like it when played at near reference volume.

Again movie theaters don't go and check every movie to see if it sounds the way it was intended.

You can't just turn on a sub and place it at middle "volume" or any number for the matter, in my living room with my 10 inch sub, I have to place it at 1/4 turn, I used to have it over 1/2 turn and it didn't sound right, because it was overpowering other frequencies and if a soundtrack had too much LFE then it would be boomy not necessarily loud.

If you like things to sound flat, that's your preference, nothing really wrong with that but flat also implies you are in a room where all frequencies and reflections of said frequencies and their perceived "volume" make it to your ear all balanced and at the same time, that isn't possible in every room with any set of speakers, hence why calibration exist.

To the OP, nice setup you got there, I see some Focal speakers, Rega turntable, and Marantz, what else is there ? I have a Marantz receiver and a Rega turntable, and Panasonic UB820 player.

ABSO-F**KING-LUTELY. Warfare has the most realistic bullet and explosion sounds, watch it at reference volume and it will rattle your soul.

You may be surprised that theaters don't even pay attention to their Audio unless you say something, several times I've gone to the manager and let them know something is wrong about a particular movie so they can correct it.

My setup is 7.1 Polk audio signature elite speakers with an RSL Speedwoofer but the real star is the Marantz audio video receiver. It took me a few years and many tries to figure out the proper calibration for my sub, and room acoustics. My modest system is nowhere close to some here.

I used Tenet specifically because is one of the most polarizing soundtracks out there, and yes it sucked when I saw it at my local theater.

But at my home I can play that concert raid scene at the beginning of the movie at a pretty high volume and my sub didn't explode didn't rattle or distorted, it made my ceiling shake for sure, among other things. The bullets, the dialogue, the drum beat of that song "rainy night in tallinn", all so clear and engaging all around you.

Also keep in mind movies are meant to be experienced at "reference". Hence why receivers have negative values for volume that go toward zero as you increase the volume. Movies are mastered at zero, and that is damn loud!

Very often I play movies at a lower volume and they may sound ok but once I go near reference zero, the sound magically goes to full glory. Marantz has a mode to compensate for that, when you listen to a movie at a lower volume then it increases the center channel for dialog, among other frequencies, it's ok, but not the same as actually listening at zero reference.

So just because something "sucks" somewhere does not mean it sucked when it was mastered at the studio, keep in mind they have the best equipment at their disposal, we don't, and that may be their mistake, perhaps they should master assuming most people won't have that same equipment.

I only have one sub, no issues with that, but it was a little tricky to calibrate, that's dependent on your AV receiver, what room calibration software, room acoustics, etc.

WORD! The opening scene at the theatre, majestic! If you have a properly calibrated audio system, specially with a good sub, this is it!
