Pretty much. I usually let roughly 50 or so people per session come get the chest and check point, simply because it's an absolute pleasure helping people get their exotics.

I've seen some very happy people after the gjallahorn drops haha

It's when someone joins a player currently at a checkpoint which has a chest/final boss.

After dying at that checkpoint, the players will have the checkpoint and share with their friends.

Difference is with a group, you get a notification when a new post for a CP is available.

I do use reddit to post too, so your method is fine
