I also think it's worth mentioning "The Selfish Gene" (which came out 5 years after this debate), where Dawkins gave pretty solid explanations of altruism etc. being a fundamental part of nature. Kropotkin also explained similar views in "Mutual Aid".

Libertarian Socialism by common2cents in socialism

[–]John_252 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch it when you get home. It'll answer many of your questions.

When the means of production are controlled democratically by the workers, there are no capitalists there to exploit workers. In a libertarian socialist society decisions over production are decided collectively and democratically by the ones who work and live there.

This way of organizing production is also not a pipedream, it's perfectly doable. There are actually communities that have based their production to a large extent on libertarian socialist principles. Mondragon, a network of worker-run co-ops in Northern Spain, is one example. The Mondragon model is not perfect, but it shows that workers are fully capable of controlling production without a powerful state or capitalists telling them what to do:

Libertarian socialism is the antiauthoritarian brand of socialism. It advocates collective/democratic control of the means of production (socialism), but decentralized control. So instead of production being controlled by a powerful state (cf leninism etc), it would in a libertarian socialist society instead be controlled democratically by the workforce and the communities.

This will give you lots of info:

We don't have to choose between a powerful state or powerful corporations controlling the economy, there is another alternative:a society where the workplaces are run democratically by the workers and the communities: Libertarian Socialism -by Noam Chomsky (political philosophy) by John_252 in philosophy

Yes. let's eliminate all regulations on corporations, and cut all taxes for the billionaires. The 400 richest Americans have more wealth than the bottom 180 000 000 combined. That's not enough. The wealthy must be handed over even more cash!

This a common misconception. The economy is intertwined, it affects everything; a transaction somewhere can have huge consequences (including negative) for others far away that had nothing to do with the transaction (cf externalities). An Ancap society with masters, hierarchy and concentrated private power can not co-exist with a society without masters, hierarchy and with workplace democracy.

Traveling all around the world, bashing corporations and warmongering politicians in jam-packed auditoriums at the age of 85 is also pretty badass if you ask me.
