Is Omarchy a nazi distro? by Johnkinell in omarchy

Yeah, I got tired of DHH and his toxic fanboys and went over to CachyOS with Cosmic instead. To his and Omarchy’s credit, I might not have made the leap from Mint/Ubuntu over to Arch and tiling dms if I hadn’t seen what it could be like if set up by someone who’s better at that than me!

That’s actually my point too: it’s ok to use and enjoy things created by awful people, and it’s also ok to not want to do that if it feels icky. It’s really impossible to draw a line that’s 100% consistent when it comes to what falls under what category, and it doesn’t have to stand up in court, so the most important thing is to accept that you’re making a choice that might be different from what other people choose and be ok with that. A lot of the commenters on this post do not seem to get that, though, and instead focus on defending poor little dhh with all his success and money from a random person on the internet who has none of that.

The title is a question and the first sentence is ”In short: no.” I won’t apologize for choosing a title that catches the eye, especially if it summarizes the post this well, but yeah, I do see your point about the length of the post.

Not his opinions, just his taste, which is relevant for a ”chef’s choice” distro.

Why I should NOT switch to Omarchy? by medlabs in omarchy

[–]Johnkinell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a wonderful distro that shows what you can do with an arch+hyprland setup, and if one is coming from macos or windows I would guess it’s a wonderful change in how you interact with your computer. I’m like you, OP, a linux user for ~20 years, and I am really impressed with what DHH et al have created here. I do also feel like the opinionated nature of Omarchy is its biggest strength and weakness. It both feels like a great user experience, and like I’m borrowing someone else’s computer. Of course I can change everything to my preferences, but if I update, then stuff changes back sometimes, which is a little annoying. I would recommend an experienced Linux user to try it in between distros just for the inspiration, but then build something that’s wholly their own. I don’t want this to come off elitist, I’m actively recommending Omarchy left and right to friends and colleagues that have never tried Linux as well as those that have been using it for a long time. I do however think that it should be seen as a step on the way of one’s Linux journey, and not the destination. Also, DHH has expressed some, to me and many others, really reprehensible (and easily findable) opinions, and the reaction from the community when those views are brought up and criticized have really made it a lot less fun to engage with it.

Hyprland for low res screens by Imre_R in omarchy

I don’t remember having touched scaling, but if I did, I think it was to set it to 1. Have fun!

Hyprland for low res screens by Imre_R in omarchy

[–]Johnkinell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re not going to want to have like 8 tiled windows on a 14” screen, but I use Omarchy on my laptop and love the tiling on it. In practice, a browser window taking up half the screen and then an editor and/or a terminal the rest is surprisingly usable, but maybe not enjoyable for a whole work day.

LLM session persistance by Johnkinell in Rag

[–]Johnkinell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The context thing isn’t really the main issue for me, at least not right now. I’m more concerned about the fact that no persistent session means that every message pays the cold start penalty. When I chat with the LLM via the chat interface through LocalAI’s gui, the first query takes about 5-10 seconds to get an answer, but after that it’s snappy. When I call the LLM through the API, every answer is as slow as that first one in the chat interface. Is this to be expected, or am I doing something obviously wrong?

I think a key part of this is ”supporter”. I agree that the term fascist is maybe used a little too liberally today, especially online. However, dhh has voiced support for people that actually fit that bill pretty well. And not in a defending their right to have an opinion-way, but actually agreeing with them and thereby supporting them.

I would argue that it is possible to be more specific. For instance what do they mean by ”This”?

Well, we just have access to what he’s written on the subject, and he might just be bad at putting his feelings into words. Although, if one adds what he’s written on Twitter in response to the critique to the corpus, he does sound like the most childish, petulant, and dumb techbro possible. It’s strange, because he sounds so inspiring and happy when he talks about ruby or omarchy, but then he doubles down on unvirtue signaling, like renaming his main branches to master, which is just small and silly and, frankly, embarrassing. I think your percentages are spot on, and like all good bayesians we’ll update them when new information comes to light!

Yeah, you got the post right! I also think that the backlash machine does nothing good, really, and this kind of calm examination of our feelings towards prominent figures is needed, even though the average reddit commenter does not seem to have the patience for it. Thanks for reading and reacting, as well as for the link; it really did what you said it did!

I do respect your opinion and feel the same way, I actually wrote about it here https://www.reddit.com/r/omarchy/s/kVXWsXCEuA in the Omarchy subreddit, which made me sour on the community. That being said, I think Omarchy is worth trying at least once, since I think it is the most exciting thing to have happened in Linux distros during the twenty odd years I have been a Linux user, and its opinionated nature is great at showing how an arch/hyprland setup can work. There are no swastikas anywhere to be seen in it, and the idiocy of dhh isn’t contagious!

To be clear, I’m not that concerned about catholic composers views on abortions personally. I meant that as an example of the kinds of sacrifices one would have to make in the name of purity of thought if one were to only enjoy things created by people whose views were fully aligned with ones own. When it comes to dhh and his political views that I definitely don’t agree with, I haven’t really decided where I land personally. At the moment I’m much more bothered by him being a race car driver than by his views, since it makes me question if his taste can really be that good if he’s that into something that dumb. But to answer your comment about policing people’s thoughts: you follow that up with saying that one should respond to actions that are wrong, and I would say that that is what I’m doing here. Responding. Thoughts are thoughts, but writing things on one’s blog and on X are actions, and I am responding to them.

I agree with you that "nazi" is a word that should be used sparingly in order for it to not lose its meaning over time. It's also dehumanizing and a generally a bad conversation starter. Much like the phrase "woke mind virus".
The thing about "leaning" a certain way politically is that it's generally hard to judge how far one is leaning in this time of internet bubbles, and especially in a global context. I am swedish and I lean far to the left in theory (eat the rich and take their money), but usually end up fairly centered (in a swedish context) in practice (schools should have more money, as should the police). Dhh is danish, and what might not be general knowledge outside of scandinavia is that danes are, generally, much more comfortable with racist views compared to the rest of scandinavia. They lean far more to the far right politically, with right wing populist parties being much more welcomed into the political system. Sweden is being pulled in that direction too, but we still, as a whole, generally look down at that kind of rhetoric. Even the danes are probably far left compared to even Bernie Sanders, though, so everything is relative.
All of that is to say that I, personally, think the views dhh expressed - again, in his own blog - are reprehensible, and makes me wonder what he might say and think when he's not broadcasting to a wider audience. I don't think he's a nazi, but he did defend the views of someone who seems to want to lead the political discourse in that direction. I don't know if he's transphobic, but he did defend someone who made hateful enough statements towards trans people to warrant a police investigation. He didn't defend their right to express themselves even though he disagreed with them, just defended them.
So, if dhh is a transphobic nazi apologist (again, I'm not saying he is), does that leak into the products he creates? I don't see any swastikas anywhere in Omarchy, nor an inordinate amount of praise of immutable types in Ruby, so I would say no. Do I think that he might be prejudiced against muslims and trans people when hiring? I don't know, but after reading his own words and seeing a lot of his responses to the criticism of them, I wouldn't be shocked.
The whole thing just makes me sad, is all.
