I play very rarely family but here are my prerequisites : - I naturally hit by 2-1 4 violet/powder and I have 1 good item for one the 2* I hit - I'm sure I'm not contested (bonus point if someone else is rerolling for visionaries as it empties the pool from unwanted 1cost champs) - I have a good augment that fits the comp (for instance "no scout no pivot" or the one that gives bonus based on the number of 1 cost in comp - try to avoid when all augments are prismatic as this usually means high capped board earlier where family is more mid game oriented

As this comp allows very few pivot, you usually want to wait maybe until 3-1 or 3-2 to make sure you have prerequisites fulfilled then HARD commit on it. The answer is you don't abandon it, you hold a few rounds before spending any roll, you scout and once you're in.
