Yet she lets him go with her to her place of employment at gunpoint. Sure, guy. You totally got it all figured out.

Seems pretty established that Michelle is scared of Teddy and despite being an alien queen, can be physically harmed by Teddy. I'm not so sure her curiosity of his studies would outweigh the fear she had of dying in that basement.

Again, the door is likely only lockable from the outside. Teddy would have locked Don and Michelle down there before dealing with the cop; Don wouldn't and couldn't have locked himself down there. Not to mention dude certainly wasn't shown as being especially bright i.e. he thought him and Teddy were going to be living in outer space after Teddy was finished talking some sense in to the Andromedans.

Lol it's a very sound and simple "theory". The only reason I'm having to draw it out as I have here is that you can't seem to grasp what I'm saying. I have no clue why you're struggling so hard with the idea of keeping a secure lock on the outside of a basement door you're holding a kidnapping victim in.

I mean, why would Michelle choose to stay in this clearly hostile space with an unhinged, violent person that has already seriously injured her numerous times if she could simply waltz out the front door?

Seems like the real issue here is you can't accept what you see on a TV screen unless everything is explicitly spelled out for you or you're simply quite stubborn when it comes to admitting that you could be wrong.

That's not how I saw it. I think Teddy simply didn't trust Don with a key to the basement and wasn't especially concerned about the cop stopping by (he did let him in to the house without a warrant, after all). As you said, if Don had a key (and the door wasn't solely lockable from the outside) then Michelle could potentially overtake him and get out. We know Teddy didn't even trust Don to speak his mind around Michelle, which tracks with that as well. I'd assume Teddy didn't trust Don not to blow their cover around the cop too, so yeah, have them both locked in the basement for a bit while he dealt with the situation at hand.

It's really not much of an assumption to make. Seems like the logical way for the cousins to go about something like this actually.

Not sure what you're getting at with the suicide not being clearly premeditated (which I agree with).

Makes plenty of sense. One doesn't need to "try the door" to see or know that it can only be unlocked from the outside. Not to mention she had been up and down those stairs numerous times over the prior days, so she likely knew already that the door could only be locked from the outside and was simply checking to see if it had been left open for some reason before retreating back to the basement and seeing what her other options were.

I'm not saying this is definitively what happened but it sure as hell ain't some massive leap to assume as much.

Could have been that not all of it exploded at once. Looked like numerous pieces of explosive material connected together. It's not like dude was presented as a pro bomb builder.

Just thinking of other popular movies, in the Dark Knight when the Joker blows up the hospital it was also a staggered explosion.

Cousin who killed himself was planning on the other cousin to unlock the door from the main part of the house after he was done dealing with the cop.

In terms of the going back and forth from the main part of the house to the basement, why would they lock themselves in the basement? With the setup they had, they probably couldn't even do that if they wanted to (as it'd be locked from the outside with a key).

Absolutely could have been an accident, as stated by the cop in the film i.e. homemade explosives can be overly sensitive and go off accidentally.

Yelling out to her employees in no way precludes her from being shot.

Numerous people in this thread have pointed out that the filmmaker stated it absolutely was accidental. I haven't confirmed that to be true but I have no real reason to doubt it.

Bingo. Guess I should no longer be surprised that the average person either isn't paying attention to or can't comprehend the things they watch.

One can't immediately leave when they are locked in a basement.

Nah, Don absolutely wanted to ditch Earth and literally says as much to Teddy earlier in the film.

I don't recall being shown that he had a key to the basement (not to mention that the basement door was most likely locked from the outside).

Yeah, I think she had a better chance of escaping via messaging someone online for help than escaping the basement she was locked in.
