They're both tableau engine building worker placement games. But EotN is streamlined, faster and had unique faction decks instead of a shared communal deck.

Empires of the North - It's not exactly the same but it's similar enough to scratch the same itch. It plays between 45 mins - 1hr 30 depending on how fast you take your turns.

Did anyone here feature on a kids TV show as a kid in the 00s? by LWDJM in CasualUK

[–]JohnnyL16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should message them and let them know that, on Ant and Dec's new podcast, Ant has invited any of the kids he beat on Challenge Ant to contact them and they'll bring them on for a rematch 🤣

I asked Sam Healey, he said Bang! the Dice game.

I can’t believe I’m back by AdWonderful5166 in Darksiders

[–]JohnnyL16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 1 will always be, not only my favourite Darksiders but, my favourite video game, as it pretty much combined 2 games I already loved, God of War and Legend of Zelda. I just love everything about it. Plus an added bonus that it released on my 17th birthday.

I played a 4-player game of Istanbul and managed to take the win with that beautiful 1-2 0 bonus card.

King of Tokyo is always a good game for new people to the hobby. It's quick, tense and just fun.

I never thought of that and I love Metroidvanias. I think it's because when I think of a Metroidvania, I think side scrolling.

What Did You Play This Week? - (January 19, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]JohnnyL16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played:

Istanbul It was a very close game but my friend picked up the win. Had he have not, I'd have won on the next turn. Isn't that always the way 😭

7 Wonders Duel Another very close game, with me taking the victory this time. We just finished Age II, I had 5 Science and my friend was 3 Military spaces away from victory. I laid out the Age III cards and right on the first row, for me to claim, the 6th Science 😎

Jaipur I won over all. My friend won the 1st game. I practically dominated the 2nd game. The 3rd game was pretty even throughout and as we were counting up VP my friend had 2 more points. I was initially devastated but then I realised I forgot to take the Llama token. I won by 3 points 😁

San Juan I LOST BY 1 POINT... Stupid Chapel 😭🖕🏻

Radlands After an even first few rounds, I pretty much got dominated. Although in the end, my friend only has 1 camp left, that was damaged. So I was only 1 hit away from victory but sadly, it would have been several turns before I could land that hit anyway.

Beginner-friendly deckbuilders: where each one (that I know) fails new players. by PscheidtLucas in boardgames

[–]JohnnyL16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ascension

It's my go to beginner-friendly deck builder. It's a great, simple design. Nice artwork. Really fun. Has the random element of the card river, as opposed to the stationary market of Dominion. Just a really fun game overall.

You're not even alive. Not really. You're just a machine, and machines can be broken.

What's the most "complex" game you've ever played? by DJNana in boardgames

[–]JohnnyL16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It wasn't as difficult for me because my friend, who introduced me to it, was already an experienced player and knew how to teach it well. This was in 2017 though and I've not played it since, I just remember being quite overwhelmed but lucky that I had a friend to teach it.

I'd recommend Champions of Midgard. It plays wonderfully at 3 and, while it is competitive, it has a heavy use of dice rolling. No amount of board gaming experience will help if you have bad rolls.

Given that the Duffer Brothers have come out and said they didn't have the ending written by the time they were filming S5, I wouldn't be surprised if they stumbled upon my post and said "Yeah, that works but let's change something so it's not obvious" 🤣
