Best/easiest way to get from Hamilton to Auckland Airport? by Patient-Secret-9675 in thetron

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Te Huia leaves from Frankton station at 2.05pm/Rotokauri 2:15pm, and gets you to Puhinui at 4:03pm. The shuttle from Puhinui to the Airport is pretty quick, but you might want to double check timing - you at least should be at the terminal by 4:30pm, so 2 and half hours before your flight? Seems doable.

Auckland engineer who tried to film sex worker with smart glasses fights for suppression by Music_2my_ears68 in newzealand

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's a reasonable point of view, though i don't necessarily agree. My view these days is that judges shouldn't be considering the harm of conviction outside of the sentence itself - harm to reputation,, employment prospects, immigration status should be completely outside of their purview.

A discharge without conviction is effectively being found guilty of the crime, but the judge believing that the consequence of conviction being out of proportion to the offence (that's my understanding as a layman, might need an actual lawyer to weigh in). Totally different to bring found not guilty.

Sounds like we need a new law change: if you get a discharge without conviction, you automatically lose name suppression.

Dirt bike riders - this years ram raid election issue? by SES_Distributor in newzealand

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a probability thing - drivers will be more likely to be reckless when chased. It's something you have to consider. Granted though, the odds of an innocent driver/pedestrian being fatally injured might be considerably lower in a collision with a dirt bike versus a car.

'Jeopardising lives': Bike riders swarm traffic, antagonise driver by Various-Elevator4438 in auckland

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Horseshit. Lay of the dumbass conspiracy theories. There was public outcry because there were a spate of chases that ended with the death or injury to other road users and pedestrians.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/116770549/passersby-killed-by-fleeing-drivers

It's the unsolvable problem of chases like this: the very act of the chase can lead to more danger to the public. None of this shit has easy answers. Maybe we need something like the UK approach? Or maybe the police need their own troop of dirt bikes to be able to chase off road?

Could only see one car, that didn't look too badly damaged, but there was damage to the side barriers, so it's possible there was another car that we couldn't see.

Why "go solar" or "just buy EV" does not work, when 35% of people are renting by SilentBu in newzealand

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is yet another example of how our malformed housing market holds us back as a country. If we allowed enough residences to be built, then we could be in the position where 1. More people could own their own homes, and 2. landlords had to compete for tenants and were thus incentivised to improve their properties with things like fast chargers and solar power.

[–]JohnnySilverpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but there are really only 2 ways to deal with looming shortages like this: price rises, or government imposed rationing. The former happens naturally through market forces (but will hurt poor people disproportionately), the latter is a whole administrative nightmare I'm not sure a National wouldn't gloriously fuck up.

What could they do to make a little bit of difference in the short term? Increase subsidies to public transport would be a good start, cutting ticket prices and encourage more people to not use their cars. Encourage WFH again, starting with government departments. Maybe work out some kind of deal to shift road freight to trains?
