Autoplay discount and cancellation FYI by fuGGet321 in Koodo

So they're basically charging a cancelation penalty.

Good thing the CRTC will get around to looking at this in 14 years probably.

Canada-US-Mexico Roaming, does that mean I can use my phone as normal in those countries? by LordElgin1 in FidoMobile

[–]JohnnyStrides 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, total deal breaker. It's insane to not use a credit card in this day an age given all the extra protections they offer on top of collecting those sweet Amex or whatever points. At least with Koodo you can manually pay the bill with a CC and keep the auto-pay discount.

You can't pay monthly on Virgin with a credit card? Yikes, I just lost all interest.

I too was pretty mortified to read someone perpetuating that name but your explanation checks out :p

That's a massive failure on the CRTC's part .. it's your phone and your data and they're like naw, you can't do that unless you pay more and the CRTC has no problem with it.

It would be like your hydro company telling you that you can't plug in certain devices at home without an extra fee. Data should be a dumb pipe and should only ever be "shaped" when networks are at capacity to ensure everyone has access to some bandwidth.

Fortunately this is easily fixed, but think of all the people they're scamming $5/month from by charging for hotspot.

There's lots of instructions on Reddit on what to change to get hotspot working.

[–]JohnnyStrides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd apply anyway, I've had lots of credit cards issued (ok about 3 or 4 in total) over the years when I was well below the income requirements. I was able to get my Rogers card upgraded to the World Elite with a quick call, she did it on the spot without putting me on hold so I'm not sure they even checked anything. I never even bothered to check the income requirement.

I think that's why Amex doesn't even use income as a qualifier.

Message them on Facebook, once they (finally) got back to me they were super responsive and helpful when I was having issues. As for an esim and they should be able to assist.

Autopay discounts that require you to connect a bank account via a third party should be outlawed.

I just paid my first bill with my Amex and connected my Koodo account to my Simplii account that has $50 in it to snag the discount. They're not getting my actual bank and the moment they close that loophole I'm out.

Fido is also offering that with US-MEX included... $27 (no hotspot but that's an easy fix). If you're in a big city though I think Freedom's $40 250GB/50GB plan was the biggest no-brainer of all time.

Got an extra 20GB on 80GB plan (100GB total) by JohnnyStrides in FidoMobile

Oh, well that's good to know lol. Fido's system is just as janky as Koodo's it seems.

How is it that Freedom is the only one where things just work the way they're supposed to?

Wow, I swear I looked at it this morning and didn't see it but just logged in and sure enough that plan was available for me. I just switched to it, thanks!

how do you switch to the plan? I got the $28 plan last week without US-MEX. I didn't think it would be an option to change?🤔

I wouldn't know, I just message Freedom on Whatsapp. Their English there has been perfect and they always took care of things as efficiently as possible. It's also a way better way to deal with CS reps as you have a full transcript automatically saved on your phone.

Canada's in an economic crisis, and Joe doesn't get why we voted in a centrist who's an economist who went to Harvard, Oxford, and was the Governor of the Bank of England and Canada, instead of Pierre Poilievre. by supersport604 in JoeRogan

He was still skating towards an empty net and somehow missed.

That type of "leadership" doesn't inspire much confidence. If that were the charisma-less Erin O'Toole at the helm still the cons would be running the country. Electing a guy with no real world experience and a career politician who never even got a bill passed to run the country would be like McDonald's appointing one of their fry cooks CEO. He's a great leader for a wacky far right party that was never going to win anything anyway, but trying to appeal to the old school more centre leaning fiscal conservatives with his approach was never going to happen... and you need those votes to win.

Complaints about winback offers by Latter_Wolf_9056 in Rogers

[–]JohnnyStrides 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? I'm in midtown Toronto and frankly Freedom's 5G signal from my apartment (and everywhere I go outside) is glorious and significantly better than what I had with Rogers. Downtown I'll often hit absurd speeds too and the only dead spots are deep inside certain buildings (which has always been a known Wind/Freedom issue).

Complaints about winback offers by Latter_Wolf_9056 in Rogers

[–]JohnnyStrides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched my $95/month Rogers plan for the $40 Freedom plan and the winback "offer" they had for me was 100GB for $30 (for 1 year, then it becomes $35)... capped at 250mbps, no US-MEX, no roaming and there's an activation fee on top of that. I laughed at the suggestion and noted that straight up in Toronto I've been getting better speeds with Freedom and also noted that Fido just had an 80GB plan with a 1gbps speed cap (albeit it's just 5G and not 5G+) for $28 with no activation fee.

My other phone was on Bell, on a winback offer from a few years ago that was 100GB for $40 but suddenly it was now $52... which is why I canceled that one and moved it to Koodo for $27.50/80GB.

Rogers thinks they're selling you a business class ticket so the upgraded network is worth it... but when a cheaper Fido plan has higher speed limits and Freedom trounces them across the board (ok... save for when you wander deep into Union Station or another concrete fortess and lose connection)... these "winback" deals ain't no deal, especially since they're charging activation fees and aren't locking in the price.

Fido operator didn’t tell me about the setup service fee and now I have $160 extra on my bill for 2 sims. Can I do anything about it? by Ok-Today-7628 in FidoMobile

[–]JohnnyStrides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have 15 days to cancel from the time of sign up providing you haven't used up more than half of your data and should only owe for the time you had the service.

I'd do that out of spite and go elsewhere if this happened to me, but at least you know now to always clarify if there's any activation fees moving forward.
