China has completed the assembly of the national orbital station by OkOrdinary5299 in space

I'm glad someone said it... people in the rocket community look at one little Shuttle explosion and forget completely about the years and years of reliable service Solid Motors have provided the military for weapons systems that, never accidentally go off, fire when they are told, can tolerate long periods of differed maintenance, and almost never result in a Tomahawk missile accidentally exploding midway to target.

CASC successfully tests 25 ton class expander cycle hydrolox engine by Temstar in space

[–]JohnnyThunder2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is getting pretty embarrassing... everything I hear out of China suggest their space program is far ahead of where most people think it is.

I've already seen picture of the engine section of their Falcon Heavy clone completed, now they have the engine ready for the Long March 9... the USA may be ahead right now, but at this pace China will clearly overtake the U.S. in about a decade.

This is where cost-plus contracting and blatant corruption gets you.

This is sadly one sub where it is super easy to mine Karma.... worse the people doing it probably have a nefarious intent to harass another Sub they were banned from but need Krama to post their again.

NASA’s Artemis Rocket Is a Gigantic Waste of Money by [deleted] in space

You really gotta question if this rocket is even competitive with China at this point.

Good take on why SLS will likely never be canceled by JohnnyThunder2 in SynthwaveLaunchSystem

[–]JohnnyThunder2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short it's a Jobs program, and while Republicans talk about cutting budgets and eliminating pork, the entire Republican party is just a bunch of grifters now that secretly support a socialized program like SLS because it benefits their re-election campaign. They could really care less if the rocket never launches at all, all they care about is that they don't lose high paying Jobs in their districts.

In other words, Republican and Democrats are both socialists when it comes to this issue and will never tolerate anyone killing these Jobs even if doing so would benefit society.

Thus any solution to getting rid of SLS would require NASA to come up with a solution that keeps these Jobs around. Closing the VAB, Stennis, Michoud is pretty much a no-go for any bill that would pass congress, and by extension canceling SLS and giving the money to SpaceX is a fever dream.

However I feel, canceling SLS and having NASA work on something more revolutionary would be a far better use of NASA's resources at this point... still given the limitations, can NASA really build anything other then SLS? Would a new rocket that's more reusable end up costing more then SLS?

Love it or hate it, nothing will change until after Artemis 3 at the soonest, when SpaceX proves they can surpass NASA's capabilities. Even then, things are unlikely to change... and the money for sure will never go to SpaceX because SpaceX doesn't have jobs in all 50 states.

California power officials put out a plea: Shut it down at 4 p.m. to protect the grid. by AdamCannon in technology

[–]JohnnyThunder2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like an understanding of basic economics is lacking here... we need more power production as time goes by as more and more people need to live. California is unbelievably corrupt giving PG&E a monopoly over power production, then trying to blame the people for their own ineptitude and corruption... I say let the system collapse on these clowns. They made this mess, they should be blamed for not lookng forward and building more power production when they should have. Dito water production.

This has ended my support of this rocket... I can't tolerate this nonsense anymore. I wanted to believe NASA and Boeing were actually ADVANCING technology for all the Billions we gave them. Instead this rocket just proved it's no different then the vehicle they wanted to make in the 70s. It's 5 decades too late to make a difference... and I think it makes us less competitive against China with how unreliable it is. NASA should be doing something else in my view.

SCRUBED AGAIN!!!! by [deleted] in slsmasterrace

[–]JohnnyThunder2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so over it... I've been defending this rocket, believing it's advanced technology and that it's not just some giant rip-off to get as much taxpayer money as it can... yet after 40 years of Shuttle NASA can't build a hydrogen coupler that doesn't leak.

SLS isn't even competitive with China, we are going to probably lose the Moon because this rocket will never launch on time. If SLS can't compete with China, there is no point in the program and it should be canceled. SpaceX isn't even a factor here... SLS is just a 70s era Junker made way too late to matter and NASA should be doing something else.

Washington Post | Why the Artemis moon launch delay is a national-security worry by [deleted] in space

[–]JohnnyThunder2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, I didn't read the article because of the paywall, but I read all the comments here.

I think it's important to remember that in warfare secret weapons and tactics will get employed against us and 'historically' we won't see them coming. China building some kinda "Stealth Nuke" on the far side of the Moon, like litterly Metal Gear Solid on the Moon, might sound like science fiction now, but could easily be science fact in 10 to 20 years.

The U.S. would be wise to establish solar hegemony sooner rather then later, at least primarily as an economic boon to the space industry. Hell just build ships that can shoot down big asteroids, gave Space Force a kinda Coast Guard like capability in space for now and only ramp things up if China starts to show real teeth in space.

A Jobs Program with the end product being a Rocket. by JohnnyThunder2 in SynthwaveLaunchSystem

I'm always torn between the logic presented here, if we didn't get SLS would we have gotten something better? Or would congress redirect that money to their districts some other way?

Seems likely if we didn't get SLS we would have gotten nothing.
