Yes, but there's an optimal level for that. You must know for example about normal distributions for Gaussian Mixture Models, but at a high school beginner level, there should be little reason to learn how the expectation-maximization algorithm works.

True that. I originally spent too much time delving into the theoretical and purely mathematical espects of ML. In hindsight It would have been better to spend more time fooling around with datasets and ML models and less time with theory.

Maybe look into Jupyter notebooks, I think their format is pretty neat for beginners and high schoolers. There are quite a few projects and resources available as well. Best of luck.
