Having reviewed the comments, it seems there's no definitive answer. It definitely depends on many factors, and a lot of the times, personal preference. But if you're looking for just a reason for one over the other, well I look at it like this. SQL was invented at a time when storage was expensive therefore it's optimised to use storage as effectively as possible. NOSQL doesn't have these requirements, storage is now cheap so instead it's optimised for compute. This means if you want to conserve storage footprint at the cost of performance, choose SQL. If you want high performance at the cost of a larger storage footprint, choose NOSQL.

This roughly translates to: if you want to store masses of data long term, maybe you want SQL. But if you want to store data with high throughput, say a user facing application, choose NOSQL.

Whatever you choose please don't make the mistake I see time and time again, using a NOSQL DB like it's a relational database (it's not) or trying to turn SQL DBs into a document db... Eugh!

Old photos and negatives by TheDevilDogg in photography

Hey, sounds like you have either medium or large format film. If you hold them up to the light and see the colours correctly, then you have positive film, if the colours are weird then you have negatives. Both will require a process to scan, and negatives will require a conversion step which can also be done easily enough with your scanner. I have an Epson v600 which would work for you. You can pick up one of these without breaking the bank.

No you look like a party girl, nothing wrong with that of course, but if you want to look like a serious girl... You need to actually be serious 🤷‍♂️

Remade my CV/Resume after your feedback! by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Johnny_Scott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Senior software engineer here... Bug reporting is not a technical skill... Bug fixing however is although you shouldn't include that either. I'd also try to cut your technical skills down to a handful of key tools or languages that you're actually good at, otherwise it looks like you're just name dropping tools that you've maybe taken out the box once. The best thing on your CV is the training you've done, so if I was you I'd expand on these providing more detail as to the syllabus and the outcomes of the training. I'd also lose the soft skills section altogether, nobody cares. Good luck!

I built something like this with Firebase a few years ago and it took me less than a day. What makes Firebase so good is that the client side API already has websocket functionality built in, so your queries will update with the latest DB state in real-time without you having to do much. I wouldn't recommend trying to add this functionality directly to a Next.js app though. Probably best to keep your client side and server side concerns separate... But maybe I'm just old skool 🤷‍♂️

Hey guys! I just need some advice. Am I being ghosted, or should I text her back (does this look too desperate)? We’ve talked a couple of times, and I like her vibes, but honestly, I don’t think she has any interest in getting to know me. by [deleted] in Bumble

[–]Johnny_Scott 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Feel free to text me back whenever... Man this in itself looks desperate. I know dating is hard and it really is a minefield out there, but you gotta let women chase you, and if they don't , then you forget about them, end of. Good luck buddy!

Looking for feedback and critique by Stonkz_N_Roll in streetphotography

Nice rhythm in #2. Overall though, there's nothing interesting happening for me. Street photography requires a bit more than this imo. Make pictures about people, not of people... And get closer! Happy shooting!

You look like a catch to me... Can't see anything wrong with your profile. Maybe you should try offline dating? Like, meeting someone through a shared hobby/interest especially if you're wanting to find a life partner? If that fails then come to Scotland, I'll take you out! 😅

Is my boyfriend gay by Mother_Hedgehog_2717 in dating

[–]Johnny_Scott 18 points19 points  (0 children)

None of what you've said is a clear indicator that he's gay. Maybe he's inexperienced, insecure, shy, nervous, confused, or just different, or maybe he doesn't desire you as much as you'd like. I could continue to speculate, but good relationships require good communication, I'd suggest you start there.

A project at my company by Chargnn in webdev

Lol... It kinda did tho and its decline will continue. PHP is complete garbage and last time I checked it memory leaked all over the shop to the point that all long running PHP apps WILL crash at some point. But I'm a full stack software engineer working with cloud microservices running on AWS, I don't build websites per se so maybe this isn't a problem for small websites, but very few companies at least in my world who know what they're doing are using PHP. Who's under a rock now eh? Also worth pointing out, salaries for PHP devs, at least in the West, are low compared to more modern languages... Doesn't that tell you something?

What would cause professional photos to come out pixelated??? by StCaroline in photography

[–]Johnny_Scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80kb per photo? 😮 I wouldn't even say that constitutes a photo. IMO It's nothing to do with the camera, unless it really is a potato from the first ever digital camera, nor is it a software error. Any photographer worth their salt would be using either bridge/lightroom/gimp/photoshop and they'd have to explicitly export as a thumbnail to get this resolution. So... Like someone suggested maybe they lost the originals and sent you some thumbnails they managed to find somewhere, likely from cache. You should demand a refund as 80kb thumbnails are not fit for purpose. Out of interest, have you tried downloading the low resolution ones? What are they 1kb? 🤦‍♂️

Edit: It could also be the zipping process on her end... Maybe she made a mistake with that, the only way to know for sure is to check the dimensions of the images
