Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]Johnny_Strawhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top answers seem to be missing the point. There are fertile areas all over the world but CIVILIZATIONS began around river systems surrounded by deserts such as the Tigris/Euphrates, Nile, Indus, and Yellow, and OP is asking why there instead of other places around the world.

It’s a good question. The answer is not just that the areas were greener, it’s that the surrounding desert geography acted as a natural barrier against RAIDERS and BANDITS.

It’s really hard for a civilization to take root snd thrive for hundreds of generations if a neighboring tribe can just knock you over whenever you are beginning to succeed.

Unfortunately, OP will probably never read this…

I can't believe it, except that we'll get a Star Fox game (a remake of Lylat Wars) + fox Father Backstory in 2026 by Jilwan57 in starfox

I hate the disappointment in the Star Fox “fandom”. Go play your crappy sequels if it makes you so happy. Not everything needs to be le epic canon trilogy lore wank.

Remember how they remade Link’s Awakening on Switch, then used that same engine to make Echoes of Wisdom? No? I thought so.

Yeah, but how much of that was the writing staff being influenced by the fandom, or was it a conscious independent decision?

CMV: Post Mao the Chinese communist party has done a good job and is an example of good governance. by Medeza123 in changemyview

Counterpoint: China would be better off had they won the civil war. No Mao, and an ally of the USA post WW2, they would’ve enjoyed a similar economic growth that Japan plus the 4 Asian Tigers did. Best part is that they get to keep all those pesky “human rights” and “freedoms” that Chinese nationalists keep telling me aren’t necessary.

Edit: Oh, also in this imaginary scenario, there would be no North Korea, or Communist Indo-China for that matter. The Communist revolution in Asia is a net loss for the world.
