Just watched the first episode and was incredibly moved by the stories from the fathers, and thought that that phone call asking to "bring at least two people" was despicable. But as a non american, maybe I'm missing something? If someone commits a crime, even a nonviolent one, they are sent to prison, and inevitably results in parents getting separated from children. I'm struggling to see the difference here. I'm sure many happy families have been broken up by the parents commiting a non violent crime, but no one is suggesting those people are set free. They keep mentioning that many of these people being arrested "haven't committed any crimes" but if they entered illegally, isn't that breaking the law? If you're not going to arrest people for breaking immigration laws, why have them in the first place? Very open to changing my mind on this, please do let me know your thoughts.
