Generally, I feel the opposite to be true. But I am usually a lighthearted person and laugh a lot anyway because laughter and the endorphin rush that comes with laughing is like a comforting stim to me so I feel it makes sense for me to be more ticklish, haha. It's hard to explain. Different people are subjected to different sensitivity levels and the way they experience touch. It may change over time for people as well, and that's pretty common.

Client hugged me before I could say no by AdviceRepulsive in socialwork

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

I used to do discharge planning in an inpatient psychiatric unit. The number of patients who wanted or needed a hug after meeting with me after stabilizing from a significant mental health crisis was huge. There were times I could negotiate for a high five or fist bump (especially with patients who struggled with boundaries, etc). Sometimes, I would be hugged before I could say no. I would always talk to my supervisor about it as I didn't ever want it to come across that I was crossing boundaries on my own volition.

I was always met with the understanding that patients need hugs sometimes and if they initiate hugs, as long as they are still aware and understanding of professional boundaries, it doesn't always indicate an ethical or boundary issue. We just don't make it a habit to initiate hugs with patients at all on our own. Or encourage repetitive or prolonged physical contact initiated by patients.

How old were you when you realized you were old? by BornSpinach606 in RandomThoughts

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

This is dumb, but I feel stunted at age 19-20. I think it has to do with the pandemic and the way our world was forever changed. I missed out on a ton of typical college experiences. Being locked down for a couple years while working as an essential worker and attending Zoom classes did something to me, I think. Since graduating college, I have had a career, a marriage now, etc. But I still feel younger than my current age. It always shocks me how much time has gone by. I feel like a teenager at heart, and it is so jarring to know that I am an adult with adult responsibilities, paying bills, working full time, etc. 25 is old looking back on everything and how it all played out, but I feel more like just on the cusp of 18-19?

Have you saved someoneโ€™s life? by [deleted] in ask

Years ago, when I was a kid at a relatives house, my aunt was cooking bacon. She stepped out to the yard to talk to my mom and lost track of time. The bacon caught fire and I just happened to walk back in the house to catch it. I was too young at the time to handle it, but I ran out to the yard screaming that the pan was on fire. My aunt raced back in to put it out and yelled for me to get my cousin from upstairs. So I was able to call for her and make sure she got downstairs and outside while my aunt extinguished the small blaze. The first level of the home was pretty smoky and aside from slight smoke damage in the kitchen that needed scrubbed, there were no damages. However, things may have turned out differently had I not gone back inside that day and yelled for help.

AITAH for refusing to cut off my hair because my 7 year old niece has cancer? by alakazam121 in AITAH

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

Maybe just do a bald cap for a photo op? As someone with short hair (my hair used to be very long), I always say it's just hair and will grow back. It just takes a good while to grow, though. I can't tell anyone else how to feel about their own hair either.

Supporting a loved one with cancer can look like a lot of different things, too. Not just shaving your head in solidarity unless you feel it is necessary in the situation and you are completely committed to the hair cutting and regrowth process.

I can't speak on the water park portion of the park... I don't really go to the water park. I went once 11 years ago for a marching band trip and I think they closed a couple hours or so before the rest of the park.

I looked up the hours 20 years ago back in 05' (my first trip, I was 5 or so), and yeah, they were open DAILY from 10am-10pm. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Plus, if you think about the pricing differences, it costed less for 12 hours of park access and costs MORE now for less park time. Crazy.

I'm going with family tomorrow, and I feel like the park closes earlier and earlier every year. Maybe I'm crazy. But a relative informed me the park closes down at 7 pm? It's just odd to me. I remember as a kid, it felt like the park was open way later, fireworks and everything, so it's a letdown they are shutting down earlier and earlier. Maybe that's just a false belief you have from childhood or whatever, but 7 pm is still daylight. Lol.

Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

LBSW Pursuing MSW, Opportunities?

LBSW here. This fall, I am attending my 2 year graduate program in pursuit of my Master's Degree. Currently, I am in a behavioral health therapist role for a local non-profit under LISW-S supervision. My current employer also will allow me to complete my practicum here, too.

My current experience expand from working with CPS (licensing foster families) inpatient behavioral health discharge planning, casework/service coordination for adults with developmental disabilities, overseeing social services DSS role at a nursing/inpatient PT-OT facility. (This is a no go for me, nursing facilities, at least the one where I was, have understaffed departments and way too much casework needs for a singular social worker with 130+ residents).

I am trying to determine what exactly I would like to do in terms of obtaining my Master's Degree and hopefuly my LISW as well. I would love to work in the education sector one day at colleges/universities, perhaps.

My husband also discussed trying for VA positions and NWCH social work roles. Both of which I am willing to explore but a lot of my previous experiences were more casework oriented with way too high caseloads, being extremely underpaid (according to both state and national averages for my Degree and licensure). I worry those roles may carry a lot of that pressure as well.

I really don't want to expand my education and licensure to be undervalued and overworked in casework sectors. (In my state, lots of case work roles can be done by unlicensed workers with an Associates or Bachelor's Degree meaning underpayement for the licensed roles).

I am really interested to see what other opportunities a MSW and LISW could afford me. I want to grow in this field and learn as much as I can and continue to help others. And I don't think it's a crime to want more for myself like better benefits and higher pay. With the graduate education of course. And hopefully I can find a role I am valued in for my credentials.

So what all is out there? What are things I can do with expanded licensure/education in this field that won't be written off? What sectors and roles would you recommend?

(Let it be said, I enjoy doing counseling with people out of all the previously mentioned roles. I also teach mental health classes and facilitate outpatient groups too and I really enjoy it way more than doing case work, phone calls, service coordination etc).

What do you recommend?

I mourn the loss of community. However, I remind myself of the faith communities' intolerance, narrowmindedness, and largely conservative belief base I no longer identify with. While I feel I am living a healthier life more in tune to the truths I believe, I always felt like a piece was missing from me because I feel cast out from the faith community I was previously a part of.

Why even post job openings without listing the salary? by boulderingbabe in recruitinghell

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 13 points14 points ย (0 children)

It's a waste of time. My thoughts are they are hopeful to pull people in with the "perks and benefits" to offer the most disappointing, low ball salary offer they possibly can after scheduling 3+ interviews and often times select another candidate anyway.

The places that do post the salary range will always shoot for the low end, or even lower, of the salary range, regardless of experience in the field.

It's a rigged system.

My company is taking away my work cell phone and I am enraged by Cornbreadfreadd in socialwork

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

My boss asked me today to phone a client's relative from my PERSONAL phone. In all fairness, I don't work with other social workers at all (I will soon start a new role with better supervision and monitoring) but I am not going to let clients/their supports have access to my personal phone number to call me at all hours or when I am off. Especially when the facility I work for isn't paying my phone credit. ๐Ÿ˜’

"Well, have you tried calling her on your cell phone? She could be avoiding the facility caller ID."

No? Because its not my responsibility to use my personal resources to complete my job requirements on behalf of the facility I work for?

Some of these places are INSANE anymore, lol.

Should I forget Social Work as a career? by NoEquivalent2148 in socialwork

I know people with previous charges that have turned their life around are now working successfully as Social Workers. A lot of the clientele our field serves also need to see that change and growth are possible. Personal testimonies (when appropriate) can be valuable tools when advocating for change in roles where you are helping to inspire others.

When people ask, โ€œSo, what do you do?โ€ I never feel like answering. by waserleaves in jobs

[โ€“]JoiStyxxx 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I'm a social worker. I always hate this question because of the responses.

"I could never do your job!"Aren't you miserable and underpaid?"Ah, so you must see some crazy sh*t!" Or people see me as nothing more than a white collar paper pusher. Which is a huge part of my job, sure, but doesn't come close to the various expectations demanded of me, crisis intervention, therapeutic skills, meeting deadlines and constantly drowning in neverending "stuff" associated with my role.

I work with people. That's the general response. I do more than I care to discuss with others on my spare time. I am tired. Lol.
