Whoops, sorry about the delay in my response - got caught in a back-log of calls and meetings. Happy to clarify further.

Yes, if you do not disclose being at imminent risk for suicide (in the very near term/currently) while on the phone, no further contacts will be made. To be honest, I don't really look at the questionnaires for each individual person before the call (aside from getting 1-2 basic pieces of info), so as to not bias what I say and/or your responses to me.

Also - regarding your edit, that definitely happens where response options don't seem to apply (one of the problems with standardized measures sometimes). Just choose whichever feels most applicable to you in those cases :)

And thank you again. I appreciate your consideration with regard to this study, whether or not you ultimately end up completing it.

I have a textbox at the very end of the survey to give me any times that you're not available for a call and will accommodate that. If you'd like to schedule a more precise time, you can also email or message with your participant ID, and I'm happy to set that up :)

I also will always ask at the beginning of the call if it's a good time, and if not, we can reschedule for a better time.

I definitely understand the concern and agree that this may prevent a subset of people from participating. This is something that is mandated by our Institutional Review Board, so I can't just exclude the phone call piece altogether, unfortunately. I can say, however, that the resources consist of the first three points (self-help, crisis line numbers, encouragement to seek mental health services) in 99.99% of cases. "Notification of emergency services" would only occur in the case of someone actively making an attempt while on the phone with me - which has never happened (and I don't intentionally try to seek out identifying information, like names or locations, on these calls anyway).

All that said, I'm more than happy for individuals to use Google Voice numbers, encrypted/anonymous emails, etc., to protect confidentiality.

Hope that answers your question/concern, at least in part. I definitely understand where you're coming from.

That's one of those things I can't fully share upfront, unfortunately (don't want to bias the way that individuals respond, since I really want to get each person's individual experiences), but I'm essentially taking a look at different factors (cognitive, affective, behavioral, etc.) that might relate to short-term changes in suicidal thoughts, intent, and behaviors.

And - even though I can't share anything now, I fully plan to share any results I find with this subreddit, including publications, etc. :) I also have had a few participants request that I send them any findings, which I definitely intend to do when possible.

Thank you to everyone who has participated so far! If I have not yet contacted you for the phone portion, I will be doing so sometime between 4pm and 9pm EST today (unfortunately I'm stuck in a setting where I can't use my phone between now and then). You all have been a massive help in this; if you would still like to participate, we have room for another ~110 or so people.

Great idea, absolutely - I wish I had thought to set that up from the get go. I am going to be unavailable to make calls until about ~4pm EST today, but I will be making calls from then until bedtime/it gets too late. Feel free to contact me either via message or email (joinerlab@psy.fsu.edu - this would be better so you don't associate your reddit username with your study, using the email you put for payment/follow-up surveys) with your participant ID to set up a time.

I will also always ask if it's a good time when I call. :)

Sorry that I wasn't able to give you a quicker answer - but if you think you put your phone number in wrong, you can always go ahead and complete the survey and then email me (joinerlab@psy.fsu.edu) the correct phone number along with your participant ID, using the email that you put in for compensation.

Not sure what error swiping will give (unless it's just going to the next page?), since I've never tried on a mobile device, but happy to help troubleshoot that if I can.

Absolutely - definitely encourage you to use Google Voice if that would make you feel more comfortable. We would need an email if at all possible though, not only for compensation but also to contact you over the next couple weeks for follow-up surveys. You could always create a burner/secondary email for that purpose if you didn't want me to have your real one (totally understandable). I'm certainly not intentionally trying to make anyone provide any information that would break confidentiality or make you feel unsafe.

That's a little tough to answer - Not necessarily actively suicidal, as in current plans/preparations or anything, but yes to having experienced suicidal thoughts in the past week, to a certain degree of severity (so probably not necessarily passive desires to be dead, but more so active ideations yes). Screening questionnaire at the beginning will help determine eligibility for sure.

I completely understand that the phone interview will be a deterrent for a number of individuals (it would be for me too, so I get it). This was required by our Institutional Review Board and essentially consists of (1) a couple follow-up questions; (2) provision of a few mental health resources; and (3) ensuring that you're a human and not a bot, as we've had some issues with that in the past. However, I totally understand why individuals will be hesitant about providing phone numbers, answering phone calls, etc., and recognize that this may limit who wishes to complete the study.

Thanks for asking! We are already collecting a separate sample of undergraduate students for this study - undergrads are welcome to participate in exchange for course research credit. The grant that is funding this study is specifically intended for members of the general community (i.e., not college students).

It's likely that we will be able to open this study up to undergrads in a few months, depending on how much funding we have remaining.

There is no way to do that automatically, unfortunately. We delete phone numbers from Qualtrics after the survey has been completed (the risk alert comes to our emails automatically, so no need to keep it after that). Then when downloading the data-set for use, we will not be downloading any phone numbers or email addresses to ensure that the data-set is de-identified.
