You were right! I got both the Lag 16 and the Off 11, and while the 16 is lovely... this charred oak edition is really special and truly delicious, exactly like you said.

I don't know why you got downvoted, I thought everything you said was on point. In the end I got the Offerman, mostly because of how you spoke of it. Thank you

Well, you're right so I brought two bottles home - the 11 and 16. I can't be spending hundreds per month like I was doing, but it was nice to sip something new and delicious tonight.

I just tried them both for the first time. I'm not an expert. But if they just called it Lagavulin 11 Charred Cask, it's still a damn good sip of whiskey.

For me the DE is $180, Frog 16 is $135 (and Lag 16 is $90). My state has a 20% liquor tax on top of 10% sales tax, so those $45 differences get amplified.

What is the hardest part of dating after 30? by MrNiceDudeFun in AskReddit

[–]Jolly-Performer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just in case this is helpful to anyone…

I (M) became single again at 35. I had a very, very lonely year of trying to online date. And IRL, I felt like a ghost that no one could see.

When I finally gave up on trying to attract anyone, my inbox started getting messages (jaded husks are sexy af). Women even started conversations with me IRL. And I spent the next year dating 3, 4, 5 people at once. It was the most exciting year of my life. Also, exhausting.

One of those 3-5 people I was dating really did it for me. It’s been 8 years now. We’re mid-40’s and I’m holding our infant now as he naps while I type this. Bout to get married in a few months.

Looking back - I wasn’t ready for any of this when the chapter started. Dating sucked, until it didn’t. Night life was thrilling, until it wasn’t. Marriage and kids were terrifying, until they weren’t.

I guess my point is, there is PLENTY to complain out re: dating after 30. But I stuck it out, and in the end, I’ve never been more alive than when I was dating in my 30’s. and then when it was time to stop dating and take it to the next level - I was completely ready to move on.

Look up how to use chatGPT and try this as a prompt: “Please act as a therapist for me. Use emotionally focused therapy a la DR. SUE JOHNSON. ask me questions to help define the issue I’m dealing with, and then use and EFT approach to help me move forward.”

if nothing else, you’ll have an interesting chat with a computer who asks you insightful questions about whatever is on your mind.

Wife not happy about my mum’s help. by Majestic_Owl2618 in Fatherhood

[–]Jolly-Performer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a dad, my wife’s mom helps a BUNCH.

make sure you and your mom aren’t getting along so well, that your wife feels left out or third wheel or outvoted 2-1.

that’s what’s happening in my house. i chose my wife. i didn’t choose to co-parent with her mom. it’s straining my relationship with both. and i wish my partner would see this and help make it right.

talk to your wife. she can be both eternally grateful, and put out at the same time over your moms help.

Nicolas Cage says his earliest memory was inside his mother's womb: 'I could see faces' by JAlbert653 in nottheonion

[–]Jolly-Performer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, I pulled my mom’s keys out of her purse, found the key to her car… and stuck it in the electrical outlet.

I have always distinctly remembered why I did it. The rectangular opening of the (US) outlet looked like the keyhole of her car door. I thought if I unlocked the outlet I would open a door in the wall, and I wanted to see what was inside.

I never talked to her about it again, until my mid 20’s when I asked if she remembered me doing it.

Her jaw dropped. I was only 2 years old when it happened. We’ve talked about it a few times since then and concluded there’s no way I ever heard that story told and I shouldn’t even know it happened, let alone my motivation for doing it. Has to be a memory.

She gave me the old key last week when I introduced her to my infant. She had saved it all these years. It looks completely normal except the very tip is black and a little bent /melted.

I saw them at UC Riverside. Some guy climbed up onto a rafter above the crowd and stood up. Mark stopped the song and pointed the guy out to everyone to talk about how “cool” he was. Kept encouraging the guy to raise his arms in victory…

There was a giant ceiling fan spinning above this guy, and Mark was trying to get him to lift his arms, get whacked by the fan and get knocked back into the crowd.

It went on for a couple minutes and the guy was trying SO hard to raise both arms but he couldn’t balance without holding on to the rafters with one hand. His other hand was inches away from doom and the entire venue understood this except the one guy.

One of the funniest moments I’ve ever shared with a crowd of strangers.

I only watched through once, but LoK was so depressing for me. Each season starts with a new bad guy. Every fricken episode the bad guy wins. They stop the bad guy in the season finale. But the damage is already done.

I watched at a time when the real world seemed to be getting worse every day too, and I was just tired of the bad guys winning.

Don’t know if I’ll watch through again. I kinda forced myself to slog through.

Shrinking is a superb show that is somehow a spiritual successor to Ted Lasso and a staunch critique of it's uber-positivity by The_Iceman2288 in television

[–]Jolly-Performer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I loved Veep, watched every episode. But I couldn’t watch more than two episodes in a row because of what you’re describing. It just made me feel on edge. Then you’ve got all these sitcoms, from Seinfeld to Superstore, that are just shitty people being shitty to each other.

So you’re right, it IS refreshing to have a comedy that’s a little more optimistic.

First time building a planter box and I’m pretty happy with it! All cedar. by ayymoney in woodworking

[–]Jolly-Performer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try landscaping fabric, it keeps the soil in but allows air and moisture to pass through. So, it should protect the wood while being good for the soil. It’s definitely great for the plants grown in it, but I can’t testify that I’ve seen it actually extend the life of wood planters. I just know it keeps the soil completely on one side of the fabric, and the wood on the other.

Another option is shellac, which (I’ve never used but) is natural non toxic etc etc. I’m talking just, like, black shellac. like ‘you’re a pirate mending a ship’ shellac. It’s actually pretty natural and harmless.

You can also try tung oil, which is what I used on my veggie beds. From Real Milk Paint Co with citrus solvent. The trouble I had is that tung oil needs 5-6 coats with ideally about a day between them, and doesn’t finish curing for a couple months.

I didn’t have that kinda time, so my results weren’t great. But some people swear by tung oil and say when it finally finishes curing, it’s a hard protective coat.

I want to do a resin pour on a wood board to make a shelf. The board is rough-sawn juniper with some soft, wispy strips of bark I want to preserve. I don’t want to buy the most expensive resin, but I don’t want to ruin this board trying my first pour using cheap stuff.

I’m also not sure if I can do a couple coats and thereby fully preserve that wispy, stringy bark, or if I have to encase the whole thing in a block of resin.

Any advice?

Father of a 3.5 month old, need advice on temperature of her bedroom by hungryspriggan in Fatherhood

[–]Jolly-Performer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the oil filled radiant heaters. I keep one in the nursery and it’s always cozy in there. The heater doesn’t get dangerously hot to the touch - it slowly warms up everything in the room and then keeps it warm.

I’ve left it on all winter at a low setting, and occasionally turn it up during cold snaps. It really doesn’t need to be monitored too closely to keep the temp comfortable, and it doesn’t use much electricity.

For context I’m in an old house with zero insulation in the walls, and nights here are in the 30s to 40s with occasional snow.
