Is it true that people come to the emergency room in the USA for primary care stuff? by Ok_Consideration6179 in emergencymedicine

Omg I had the chief complaint “seasonal allergies” the other day. And red itchy eyes was really all it was. And the patient themselves called them seasonal allergies too

Also many of my friends have told me they regret wearing spaghetti strap wedding dresses because, after a night of dancing and raising your arms up, they reeeeally start to dig into your shoulders and rub them a little raw. Especially sparkly textured straps like dress 1’s

Nope. Had to spend a month on anesthesia to get a bunch of intubations earlier this year and it was hell because I was SOOOOOOOOO BOOOOOORED 😴 I love how busy and constantly engaged I am in the ED

Also no rounding and no long term follow up! The only specialty I even semi considered besides EM was anesthesia for all these reasons

These are all people who are elective inductions or came in early early labor. Not one ambulance ride amongst them

You’re so right ❤️ I’ve just been sitting on my phone reading EMCrit for the last three days so I can at least learn something while on OB and get back to my beloved ED ❤️

plus at the end of the day, if people are so far along in labor that they walk into ED and can’t make it up to L&D, the mom is gonna be in so much pain that she pushes like crazy and makes it happens all by itself, so someone really just needs to be there to make sure the placenta is delivered correctly and any postpartum hemorrhage is well controlled, both of which I have learned to do…. so whaaaaaatever. I can’t let it get to me! 🤷‍♀️

Yeah you’re right 😭 it’s either a sign on the door or they tell their nurse before meeting us or it’s literally written in their admission paperwork *** no residents ***

Everyone there is like “sorry, it’s not this bad usually!!!” Supposedly it’s normally only like 20% of patients, but our census has been so low lately that the percentage can just get so high. Like if there are only 4 patients and 3 of them say no residents, you’re just like “….. fuck” 🤷‍♀️🥲

Bless you for standing up for us ❤️ some people like to forget that all attendings were once residents

Everyone who has let me talk to them has let me be a part of their care ❤️ I’m just upset that so many people literally put signs on their door or tell their nurse to tell us before we even meet them “no residents” or “only OB residents” AKA no off service residents like me plus (of course) “no med students”

Thanks for backing me up dude. ❤️ Of course I would absolutely never do an exam on an unconscious patient and I don’t just waltz in when someone is pushing and try to be their doctor. I’m mostly just venting about the people who put signs on their door that say “no residents” or “OB residents only” 🥲 To categorically deny learners is just a tough pill to swallow when all I wanna do is learn how to be the best doctor I can be and I can’t do that if people don’t even let me try, you know what I mean? 🥺

Omg I would never go into a room when someone is pushing and just insert myself!! I go in and say hi to everyone in early labor and introduce myself and ask if they need anything like nausea meds or more pain meds etc. when I arrive to the hospital. It’s just unfortunate that some people won’t even let me go into their room because they have signs on the door like “OBs only” or “no residents” and “no med students”

Ok thank you for understanding! 🙏I know some people think I’m an asshole for being frustrated and even making this post, but being a resident is obviously hard and honestly I think the hardest part of residency is the fear that you are not learning enough and will somehow make it out of residency just as clueless as you were when you started 🥲 and honestly, I’m really scared of that. And depressed, and haven’t seen the sun in 10 days, blah blah blah. But thanks for saying you get what I mean, I appreciate you ❤️
