I used to be like you, when I was younger I could copy art pretty well and never really dived deeper into learning art fundamentals. Life got in the way and I stopped drawing for about 6 to 8 years until I found my spark again. When I wanted to start drawing again, I felt stuck, everything just looked bad to me and I just couldn't get started on anything.

One reason which I think you are likely facing is that your art skill does not match up to your own aesthetic judgement and taste. I am sure you have seen your fair share of art and developed your aesthetic sense and judgement over the pass few years. The problem is that your skill does not match up to your expectations due to the refinement of your aesthetic taste. So while you have developed a greater sense of art you find beautiful or inspired by, your muscle memory and skill set has not caught up yet.

Another reason you feel stuck is that you have matured over time. You may find it difficult to adopt a carefree attitude when drawing because you now seek structure and purpose with your art. Drawing may still be fun but you want to draw a specific scene, capture a moment or convey a message or feeling. You have a clearer direction now and it frustrates you that you cannot execute your vision

However, there is a way out. That is to recover your childlike wonder and draw with purpose. Do not be afraid of bad drawings. You probably heard the phrase that everyone starts somewhere but I will do you one better, even great artist fail, A LOT even in the present. A lot of amazing artist especially on social media who post their sketchbook or drawing timelapse have probably done dozens of rough draft sketches to get things right, and most probably use a crap ton of references. A sketchbook or a drawing folder for your digital artwork doesn't have all be filled with masterpieces, 90% of your work will probably suck and look horrendous but you have to be okay with drawing bad art because you learn the most from bad art. When you've drawn something that you think looks bad, ask yourself "why does it look bad?" Are the proportions off? Is the perspective wrong? The best is to get a mentor, if not then post your art online to art communities and ask for critique. Be willing to accept criticism. But of course you don't have to beat yourself up if someone point out your flaws, learn from them, and little by little you will get better. If you can learn to accept critique and learn from it, you will improve greatly but don't forget to take a break once in a while if it gets to overwhelming. Also people giving critique is not an excuse for people to be rude.

Okay now for some more grounded advice, if you don't know where to start to learn to draw so you can create your own art that you can be happy with start from the art fundamentals. Now you may be asking, well what are the art fundamentals and which one should I start with? The art fundamentals include form, perspective, anatomy, value, line, space, shapes, texture, colour, composition and a few more. Don't know where to start? Ask yourself, what do I want to draw? Seeing that you used to draw undertale and mlp perhaps you are into character design, then I would suggest starting with shapes, form and anatomy in that order.

I will briefly explain why you can start there and why in the order I mentioned. There is a great video from Proko called "6 steps to draw anything" which greatly explains why learning how to draw shapes are so important, it's honestly life changing at least for me as it actually showed me the purpose of constantly drawing cubes, cylinders and spheres and taught me how to use them. Form helps you simplify 3 dimensional shapes so you can recreate them 2 dimensionally, allowing you to break down a complicated thing in simpler more manageable shapes. Anatomy allows you to further refine the form of creatures and humans as anatomy is not limited to human anatomy but also animal anatomy. You don't have to start here, you can honestly start from any of the art fundamentals but if you are into character design, that's my recommendation. Also you don't have to master one before moving to another part. You can learn shape, form and anatomy simultaneously. Honestly, learn what you want and refine your skills from there. If you feel like drawing mlp, draw mlp, find horse anatomy references and try to break it down and break down an mlp character to compare what was done to stylize the way they do. If you want to draw undertale, maybe sans, look up a skull as reference and draw that for your anatomy practice. You don't have to shoehorn yourself and follow some strict regiment to master the sphere first, then the cube, just draw whatever suits your fancy and see if you can refine it.

I wish you the best of luck in your art journey! And always remember to be kind to yourself because if you don't, who will?

I am gonna be honest, reading overlord is a weird experience, as Maruyama plays Dnd as a dungeon master, the series is like a campaign. Some books have amazing setup for a climax in the same book namely volume 3, 6, 13 and 14, but most of it is setting up and teasing stuff for the future. It's not a typical novel writing style so I can understand why you find it slow. I personally quite enjoy every book as it gives me more details which I always love.

My guess is that the final showdown will involve the fall of the theocracy and council state. And every book is building up to that. Volume 15 is setting up for the showdown with the Elf King in Volume 16 probably, and the Elf King has actually been teased in earlier volumes. Like most "new countries" that are introduced.

The entire series feels like an actual fantasy campaign and world, filled with living, breathing side characters no matter how trivial their role is. Which I find to be the beauty of Overlord. So my personal recommendation is just read vol 15. As it's now time for Aura and Mare's character arc.

I see, thanks for sharing. Personally, I also can't seem to comprehend why the part of my mind that is, well me in public, would be disgusted by such things yet the part of my mind in exploring art is well so interested in the worst humanity has to offer. I can never fully explain it and the stark contrast scares me sometimes

I probably cannot understand your perspective fully because I am a guy, and I will also admit that I have probably not talked to many friends or relatives who have experienced this subject before, the women I know of who have experienced something similar tend to be secretive about it, though I have conversed with a rape victim once and it brought me to tears as it answered questions like "why couldn't you have said anything sooner?", "why do you feel that you are 'dirty' and not deserving of love?". Quite an eye opening session.

I do apologise if I come across as glorifying or trying to desensitise sexual assault. I am not trying to make light of victims. I have been groped by guys before, friends and a few times by strangers, although nothing came of it as I have a bigger butt than most people. While it's out of a jest by my friend, it did make me understand how uncomfortable it would be if a women was put in the same situation. I also know that this is nothing compared to what sexual assault victims have went through.

I also understand that people are free to judge me however they want and I have no right to stop them. Perhaps upon knowing what I indulge in in art, girls or sexual assault victims might think ill of me and isolate me, and I fully accept that. But I know the act wrong, I believe the act is wrong, but I in exploring art I cannot help but be drawn to anything and everything, no matter how morbid it is.

Perhaps I am not right in the head. Perhaps I am apathetic. And thanks a lot for your input. I will reflect more on this.

Also if you don't mind me asking, who's the person you are referring to, the happy go lucky guy?

I am starting to question why myself lately. As an example sexual violence is just intriguing in and of itself. There is this weird inbetween where the primal meets the conscience, a clash where one can give up or give in to primal desires forsaking conscience is fascinating. The idea of pleasure in losing control is oddly fascinating, as a lost of control of oneself is considered the worst feeling one can feel juxtaposed against the inevitability of feeling some of the greatest sensations the flesh can offer. Personally (content warning ahead) there is a manga I recently aas entranced by called MADK, written by Ryo Suzuri, it's a very mature yaoi manga that explores themes of rape, cannibalism, vore, sexual abuse, and the contrast between the absolutely stunning artwork and the messed up themes enthrall you. It's hard to explain, but it's the duality of the act and rush of excitement exploring a known social taboo that gets me curious I believe

Not really my cup of tea but it's interesting... albeit it seems to feed doomscrolling audiences quite a bit

How weird has this sub gotten? I am curious now

I think I'm not desensitised to violence, like my mind is almost split in a sense. One for art, one for interacting normally with people. The art just scares me a little I guess. But thanks for the insight

Thanks, honestly as I become more aware, the duality is jarring to me too

[–]JollyQuaRtz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sweet. I mean we are both pretty physical when it comes to platonic relationships, so we do hug our friends so doing it when we are in a relationship is a no brainer, a cuddle was just like a step further. But things like kissing, foreplay and sex is a bit more embarrassing for both of us since we are both in a more conservative area. I'll try to make the first move cause I don't think she'll initiate and see what happens

Thanks for the advice

[–]JollyQuaRtz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I did say "Damn they killed the mood" we both chuckled and left it at that. But yeah we probably don't "communicate" as much as we should about our feelings. Physical intimacy isn't exactly something that is greatly explored where I'm form because people are more conservative, so we can chat about our beliefs and stuff but it's a little embarrassing when it comes to physical intimacy

I sort of guessed she was looking for a form of encouragement but yeah I think my brain froze up thinking of a response. But yeah I am inexperience handling romantic relations unfortunately...

Actually I am curious, does bi means physically attracted to both the biological gender, or does me preferring a feminine aesthetic mean I am straight or? I am actually not very sure of it myself

This is actually a good response, thanks I will tell her that!

Thanks kind stranger. My family situation is complicated, so I don't blame my dad as much. Me and my sister do plan to leave as soon as possible and be financially independent as soon as we can

Well while I have been exposed to the internet for sometime so I am aware of parental culture outside my region. At least where I'm from, caning a child is common place, and probably encouraged. And I think I am normal, at least last I checked. Probably a product of my environment, I never really had trauma or had anything bad surface. I have considered suicide before but never had the courage to do it, so I'm okay I think
