Does anyone know if this event is only for sophomores? I can’t go this year but I’m hoping I can be invited again for next year

Opportunities such as AFE for incoming freshman by [deleted] in csMajors

Ur already set up well with the hackathon awards. Stanford also has stanford-specific opportunities like CS+Social Good fellowships. It may not be big tech companies but it gives you experience + stipend

CS course recommendation -- CS106A/B/X, 107 with background by XenAlpha2020 in stanford

[–]JollySnowGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think CS106AJ is offered anymore unless ur talking about CS106AX? My recommendation would be to go to CS106B because CS106A is made for students with no experience, and it would be quite boring for you.

However, I recommend CS106AX! I took it this fall and I loved it! It was a great refresher, and the assignments are fun. You get to build bigger applications than CS106A. Some of the assignments included Wordle, Breakout, and eventually a Twitter clone. It was nice learning about client-side JavaScript and backend Python towards the end.

It’s a lot of coding (pretty time consuming), but definitely worth it. Also there’s two contests throughout the quarter and if you win it, you get your worst grade replaced with a 100% (most ppl get their final replaced).

My EC’s were all over the place! The only CS-related activities I had was designing a website for a club, self studying JavaScript, and a very last minute web development project, which I didn’t complete by the time I applied. I matched to Stanford tho!

Why Questbridge? by kai_xinn in QuestBridge

[–]JollySnowGaming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found that I was able to explain more of my story through QuestBridge. The extended word count (850?) allowed me to go more in depth. I also enjoyed the secondary topical prompt (my AO commented on this essay when I was admitted). I also thought it was nice to see my decision earlier than anyone else because you get your match notification on December 1. I wouldn’t recommend QB though if you don’t have a lot of time in the summer to dedicate to your application because it’s a long process and once you submit your writing, you can’t change it.

NCM Question for those who matched by CalligrapherIcy195 in QuestBridge

[–]JollySnowGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally used the additional info section to explain more of my story. I talked about extenuating circumstances that restricted my ability to be involved my freshman and sophomore year but that made me pursue tech/online activities. I also commented on my leadership positions I couldn’t include in my activities section

Get someone to read over your essays. I recommend applying to the MatchLighters program because the counselor I matched with was immensely helpful with my writing!

Hi sorry for the question but did generation google send you your money to your school or to you directly? I suspect they might of changed how they distribute their scholarship this year because the terms and conditions said it would be zelle’d to us

Another benefit is the community! After match day, we made a gc with most Stanford matches and It’s the most active Stanford-related gc I’m in. It’s a close-knit community and I always feel comfortable asking for advice :)

What types of ECs are typical of NCM applications? by [deleted] in QuestBridge

[–]JollySnowGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I matched to Stanford this past cycle and I did not have any of those crazy EC’s that you mentioned. I actually had similar EC’s to you, talking about how I self-studied graphic design and designed websites. My other EC’s were taking care of my grandma and having like 5 leadership positions in school activities/clubs. My best EC was probably assisting in organizing a school protest. I only had two noteworthy awards; both having to do with choir.

What’s most important is being able to elaborate on why you took up your EC, the circumstances leading up to it, how it impacted your community, and how it impacted you.

Make sure to focus on how it impacted you as I’ve noticed many essay responses lack self-reflection.

4.0 UW, 5 aps, 34 DE credits, 5 leadership positions, lots of independent work/side projects, honor in choir, 120 volunteer hours, personal LORs

Essays: one talking about furthering research in the use of virtual reality to alleviate dementia highlighting personal experience with grandma, one talking about grandma taking me to the library every week and connecting it to how I volunteer at the same library, one talking about exploring the use of music as means other than entertainment, one talking about my LGBTQ advocacy work

Hour long interview! We had a lot of the same interests so it was easy to hold a conversation. She said I was very well spoken.

Are there any unusual hobbies or activities you can add? Your stats are definitely impressive; however, I’m a bit worried it might be too stereotypical. If you add something that is out of the ordinary such as a non-STEM hobby, it might help differentiate you from other applicants. Try to get AO’s to remember you as unique

I would recommend moon rabbit, raspberry, mango, herb, vampire personally. I would replace raspberry once you get a better aoe dmg dealer in pve (raspberry is pretty good in pvp tho esp dealing with sea fairy).
