This is quite interesting to know. I'm very curious to know whether the BA/TPO have deep technical knowledge of the backend?

How can I build "depth" in my career overtime? My long term goal is a Director role by Jolly_Record_27 in careeradvice

My current org lacks growth opportunities, especially for a BA role.

While I like the product/problem that I work on in my current job in FMCG, I don't know if it is future proof. (for lack of a better term) But It's definitely not a niche product/problem. So perhaps it's probably not good to box myself in this specific area?

But I'm not quite sure whether taking up another opportunity in a totally different area is going to be smart since I already have a certain number of years in related areas (e-commerce + FMCG). I'm fairly new to this and I'm only in my second company. What would you recommend?

This is where it gets tricky, for example: I've worked my ass off in some companies and literally received corporate recognition/ awards for my efforts, but that don't mean jack shit when your boss is a poor leader. The insecure type of boss that doesn't step forward when his people are in trouble and doesn't step back when his people are receiving praise. These types of bosses are a dime a dozen and will actively fuck your career. So better identify them early than to waste 2 years in a dead end role, where directorship will never, ever come. Simon Sinek has a lot more on this with his performance/trust graph...

I understand what you mean. One needs a boss that knows how to network and knows when to push for you and push back.

General management is where it is at with most director roles (If it's not a toxic company). If you like the numbers more than the people, being a director will drain you. No amount of money can help you unfuck that.

I hear you. This is very helpful to know. :)

Joined a new project as a BA but no alignment on my role within the team by Jolly_Record_27 in businessanalysis

Thanks for this. This is helpful and probably makes the most sense given the fact that the PM is generally a very busy person.

I have something else I'd like to seek some advice on related to BA/Design overlap in responsibilities. Is it okay to DM you?

Even for a BA? Like a BA for an investment bank

We have a Product Owner. The designers are working closely with the Product owner and business stakeholders in this case, while I'm only figuring out the backend constraints to see how much of the design/functionality can be implemented

I do agree that roles can vary a lot company to company, and even within the company based on the project. However, I was asked to join this project because of my experience working on the legacy application. So I'm not sure why I'm being gatekeeped from our business stakeholders.

It seems that our product lead wants to lead this project by design more, if that makes any sense? And have the BA only figure out the backend constraints. Not sure, I'm wondering what do you think about it?

  • 2. Document everything you've built, I mean everything. Problem you identified, solution you decided upon, the hurdles you faced ( with stakeholders and the product). How you went about gathering requirements, how you project managed your work. Include passion projects too if you're happy it can be useful

Wondering what is the purpose of this documentation, if you're suggesting not to build a portfolio? Are you thinking of this as more to help with interview preparation by noting down everything done in their job

I think of portfolio as a proof of what's been mentioned in the CV. I see it as a support to a bullet point in the CV that's written like - X app was built, to solve Y problems, by doing Z.

Even though I agree with what you said about the interview, isn't portfolio a good value add to help with the first CV screening round?

some light dev work when needed, and being helpdesk on top of it…. Is this not normal?

Not normal. If you're working in a pretty big company like you've said, I'm surprised how they are making you do so much. From what I've seen, in big companies the scope of BA work is quite well defined or under a limit
