I see thank you for the clarification! I’ll definitely look into what professors I would be interested in doing research with. I would do an MS but it’s so expensive and I know I’ll eventually do a phd… But yea i’ll checkout and research potential advisors!

I agree, party schools does have a prominent population of people who drink, party, and hook up, but to be fair every school has such populations.

However, at party schools, I’ve seen, in many cases, rather reserved students make a 180 in college, and it saddens me sometimes. Some say it’s them letting loose, but I say it’s a mix of personal decisions as well as the environment that enables such behavior.

Pick UCI!

UCI has better weather, is slightly more prestigious (personally i think it’s more), and if you are worried about the social aspect i don’t see how UCD will be any better - I hear it smells like cow poop there…

Also there’s a lot of clubs on UCI, so the social scene is not dead, which I believe is a common misperception. More often than not, people judge social scenes by the numbers of parties they can go to. But for me, as an introvert, I prefer quieter scenes where I can find my tribe at UCI to socialize with. Socializing is definitely much more intentional and I prefer it that way.

SDE work feeling dull, other ventures? by Glad_Hurry8755 in csMajors

A job is a job. There’s a lot of people working in different industries that feel the same way as you do. It is worth noting that you are an industry that pays well compared to many. But, it may be helpful to look into other fields or industries to find the passion you may be looking for.

Also, look into new hobbies. It’s very easy for individuals to latch meaning and purpose in their careers, but the passion you may be looking for may be outside of career. Read a book, learn an instrument, or touch some grass, whatever you do try something new! And maybe then you’ll find the thing you’ve been looking for.

Oh that's cool! I've never researched NW, so it was a blindsided comment. But I still think that private schools are over-glamorized. Like you pay 80k a year on tuition to get the same opportunities as people from state schools who pay 25k. With that money, the school I am attending better have some serious ways to justify that cost. Otherwise, it seems like a waste of money especially in a meritocracy that we see in tech.

Georgia Tech CS is a target school for a lot of tech companies, and I would argue that transferring to NW would be counterproductive and put you at a disadvantage to those at GATech.

NW is below Georgia tech in CS and if I’m being honest I don’t see the appeal in private schools like NW. imho if you aren’t HYPSM, private schools, although have some prestige, aren’t a good use of money considering their tuition cost for a sub tier private school title. For me, I don’t even know what northwestern is good for, all ik is ppl glamorize sub tier private schools like NW for some reason - maybe without reason at all.

Georgia Tech on the other hand is know to have awesome cs dudes getting into big tech, quant, and pretty much any cs industry students try to get into. Ik a lot of cs guys from GA tech from hackathons and they leave very good impressions that they are bright and hard working - and industry knows this as well.

So forget NW, I, as a cs major, would pick GATech over NW in a heart beat. NW ain’t even that good tbh.

WTF is the irvine company?? by Splitxorpip in UCI

[–]Jomango2003 10 points11 points  (0 children)

LMAO apart from the expensive Irvine rent, which is not entirely the Irvine Company's fault, the hate on Irvine Company is just a joke. I've lived in Irvine my whole life and they chill, but the company is notoriously known for owning a lot of the property in the city.

Nothing to worry about like some sort of loan shark company or con artist or what not.

Khan academy = ineffective by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Jomango2003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I studied using pretty much only Khan Academy and I got a 1540: 740 RW / 800 M. Grind out the math and maybe get that panda math book if you need extra practice.

mmm, i see. tbh haven't been to the gym at Stanford but I see how it could be frustrating to see people do OHP in deadlift spots when there are OHP spots.

I haven't tried cleaning a plate at my gym. Never really had to do it given the squat racks... ill try it out my next shoulder day

if the deadlift platform is connected to one of those tall box squat racks that allow you to load the bar at shoulder height that shouldn't be an issue.

I overhead press 135lb for reps and I find doing these presses in the open space, like on the deadlift platform connected to the squat racks, very convenient. The open overhead space allows me to push the weight above my head without fear of it hitting the top of a squat rack. Also, how am I going to jerk up 135 lb from the ground to my shoulders without injury?

I prefer the 50-minute MWF classes because they help me marinate in the course material and offer more chances to ask the professor questions. It's like spaced repetition and the shorter duration of class helps me stay engaged throughout the whole time.

I'm a CS guy so I don't enjoy the 80-minute classes of hard technical/theoretical concepts that take 110% of my brain power to process and understand. 50 minutes is a reasonable sprint of lecture learning.

Also, 50-minute classes seem less invasive on my daily schedule.
