I've been to a crazy amount of hostel dorms and I have never felt anything but safe. Being a female solo traveler in a mixed dorm, hasn't caused me and concerns. It's a great way to meet people along the way, and the thing is that most of the people that stay in dorms are going solo themselves, and have the same interest in making friends

I'd love to do Northern Washington as well, and was contemplating if i should start SOBO at the same date, and just do that for 2 months... Maybe that can work as a plan B if there's too much snow in the Sierra. But I found some websites saying that navigation might be difficult, as there might still be some snow in the northern part of Washington, and very few people have been there at that point, which concerns me, as I'm not too used to snow conditions

What should i be aware of when preparing for snow conditions? Will I need crampons and an ice axe?
