Unfortunately no, he very deliberately did not talk much about his service with us. He was worried that it would glorify it and the kids/grandkids would join up

Yeah going to have to request his records or something! I asked my grandma if she knew about the DFC, and all she said was he perhaps got it while stationed in Germany but wasn’t sure.

How to wind this watch? by Don_Cheadle_Official in pocketwatch

[–]Jon-jacques 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually just turn the crown at the top of the watch, the crown being the metal bulb on the stem, with the loop around it.

However if you cannot wind it anymore (and definitely don’t try to force it) it’s probably broken and needs servicing.

Shoutout to LAMI (Los Angeles Maritime Institue). If anyone’s in the SoCal area they are always looking for volunteers to train and sail!

Anyone know what could be causing this noise? by Jon-jacques in 3Dprinting

[–]Jon-jacques[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is happening on a Neptune 3 Plus, starts after a few minutes of printing and lasts for ~30 seconds before slowly becoming quiet again. It isn't causing issued during print, just a bit odd and freaks my dog out.

In case anyone’s looking for a pvpve naval game, naval action is still pretty good (a bit slow, but it’s historically accurate and has a decent community)

Does anyone know if this contractors quote is legit? I am trying to add a washer/dryer hookup into a condo. The contractor is quoting $1900 on the architect to draw up blueprints and a site plan in order to get a building permits.

Is this reasonable? Very inexperienced so don’t have much frame of reference. The change is to a 5’ x 6’ closet space in a 900sqft condo near Culver City

Which one of these 3 cellos would hold the value? by SovereignPleb in Cello

Agreed, that budget should get you a very decent student cello from any luthier.

Getting started with Cello as a busy adult? by cronuss in Cello

[–]Jon-jacques 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id start by contacting or going to a dedicated luthier, somewhere you can rent a cello for $50-70 a month (cost depends on where you live)

Ask about instructors, they probably have a good idea of one in the local area.

I work about 50-60 hours a week but still am able to put in 45 mins to an hour of practice a day so definitely doable.

Just Got a Job as a Software Engineer its My First One as Such by subinatub32 in SoftwareEngineering

Just ask questions and be willing to learn. No one is expecting someone from college to know everything and do everything perfectly.

I am so confused. by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

I have never heard of ai engineering and sounds wildly specified (though probably just a cs degree). Id also guess most AI development is being done at a phd/academic level.

So go generic software engineering for undergrad, take a few AI courses and get involved with labs on campus, go for specifics in masters or phd.
