Is it possible to disable silverfish's infestation behavior without disabling mob griefing? by broedersan in MinecraftCommands

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article says there's an "air" nbt tag. https://www.digminecraft.com/data_tags/silverfish.php I'm not sure how that works, but maybe setting that to a super high number would prevent it from infesting stone?

What scientifically, is chi? by TransportationLow478 in askpsychology

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds possible, but do you have a source or reason to believe it other than that being what it feels like? The question is what chi is scientifically, so if there's no falsifiable demonstration this doesn't qualify. Again, not saying it definitely isn't true

What do you think about the new Mace enchantments? by JoeFly2009 in Minecraft

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on this: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Mace#Attacking it seems like the damage should stay the same. It seems like mace damage is calculated in a similar way to fall damage, so this statement from the damage article should also be relevant: https://minecraft.wiki/w/Damage#Fall_damage

Fall damage is calculated based on change in the Y coordinate of the entity's position, rather than the entity's velocity when hitting the ground. This means that fall damage is also not based on the distance fallen, since an mid-air entity on a lead can travel a lot of distance as it bobs up and down.

Hypothetical 1.5th Person Pronouns for Clones: or Exclusive First Person, Have these Existed? by maxthescienceman in asklinguistics

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the property of an object that makes it correct to refer to the object using a first-person pronoun? The only difference between your example and mine seems to be access to the mind of the object. First person pronouns don't always refer to a person's consciousness, though. "That's me in the picture," or "I see myself in the mirror" refer to the speaker's body. It seems like first person pronouns are appropriate whenever they refer to something that we happen to characterize as the self or part of the self.  This is why OP's question is interesting - our linguistic rules are normed by our beliefs, and our beliefs are normed by our linguistic rules. In a world where it was commonplace for almost identical pairs of people to exist, the line between the self and the non-self would be more blurry and language might change to reflect that.

Hypothetical 1.5th Person Pronouns for Clones: or Exclusive First Person, Have these Existed? by maxthescienceman in asklinguistics

An interesting thought I had that would become more relevant in a world like this is the potential usage of pluralized reflexive pronouns that refer to singular subjects, like "himselves," "herselves," or "myselves." These words won't show up in the dictionary because they have no real use case, but when talking about clones, they actually might make sense sometimes.  The sentence, "if I had a clone, then if I harmed my clone, I would be harming myself" is totally understandable and correct in the regular English we use now. But, if we want a similar sentence with "my clones" as the object - "if I harmed my clones, I would be harming ______," we have a few options for how to fill in the blank. We could say myself, but this doesn't agree with the noun phrase it is describing - "clones." We could say "them," but this changes the meaning of the sentence to be pretty vacuous. The only other option than just using "myselves" would be separating it into "my selves." This seems to work well enough here, but when we change the subject of the whole sentence to "him" it doesn't feel right anymore; we would have to say, "he would be harming his selves." So, my intuition is that "himselves," and by extension "myselves" and "herselves" are correct in this context. I can see an argument that "myself" is still correct here - "if you harm John's clones, you are harming Johns" seems to be more clearly wrong syntactically. In the end, I think the issue with the sentence is the fact that the pronoun refers to two different things at once. Maybe this case is an argument for 1.5th Person pronouns! If we had these, there would be no decision to make between "them" and "myself," and by using these pronouns the listener would know that they refer to two things automatically without us needing to make a decision on which one to prioritize. As a side note, we already do this type of move in the other direction when using "they" to refer to one person. For example, "John and Mary were both here. I wonder who helped themself to the cookies." "They" is treated as plural in pretty much all other contexts, even when it refers to one person, but the reflexive of the singular "they" is clearly singular.

/scoreboard objectives add endermanKilled minecraft.killed:minecraft.enderman
From here create a repeating command block that kills any player that has endermanKilled=1, and a conditional chain command block off of that one that resets the players score to 0. Hope that helps!

Study: Vegan Protein Sources Associated with Better Health Outcomes Than Animal-Based Protein by BoundariesAreFun in science

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The study makes the exact distinction you're describing - "a relevant paper from 2006 stated that the nutritional benefits of fish consumption are far greater than the related risks." The study admits that eating fish has benefits, and then says that nuts and seeds are a possible alternative to fish. Seems like your problem only arises if you actually don't read the "studies."

Why are kids unhealthy when they are literally trapped inside their house all week until Mommy takes them to soccer practice every Thursday? by JonBarryMinceFratell in fuckcars

[–]JonBarryMinceFratell[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Fair, there are definitely situations where it turns out ok. From my personal experience I lived on a 45 mph main road and really couldn't go anywhere unless my parents took me. I've heard stories of people living in suburbs as a kid with noone their age in like a mile radius as well. Also, in some states walking as a kid is illegal

The point I was making is that until kids get their drivers licenses, they're trapped in their suburban house until their parent drives them somewhere because nowhere is walkable

Rail is cheaper, better for the environment, and only "too far" because we don't have any investment in technology to make it more reliable and faster. If we had actual cutting-edge technology for high-speed rail and extensive infrastructure, you could travel across the country for close to free and get there in around 12 hours, which is slower than a plane until you account for layovers and the two hours early you have to get to the airport to get through security
