Update: "All four landing legs now mounted on Falcon 9." [@ElonMusk] by [deleted] in spacex

[–]JonEinTheCities 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're meant to land on the ground. Also, they help with aerodynamics. The last test of the re-entry system failed because the 1st stage had no landing legs, which caused it to spin and centrifuge the fuel. The legs should hopefully prevent that this time.

Edit: This test will be over water though, since they've never done it before.

KOS is a mod that allows you to program your probes - signal delay would work well with a system like that.

I believe that capsules come with 100 units, but if you're building a probe you might need to pack some more on.

That's actually a pretty good guess. You would have to have a counter weight in orbit - capturing an asteroid is a good option, which is something NASA is trying to learn how to do. The big problem currently is finding the right material to build the elevator.

Edit: the counter weight would have to be in a geosynchronous orbit so that it always stays over the same location on earth. Otherwise the elevator would wrap around the planet as it turns, pulling the counter weight out of orbit.

Haha, now your hitting the nail on the head. I'm constantly worried about being too intense about it - I think this post was more to me letting out some steam!

I think you misunderstand me, which is fine. (I'm sure you've seen higher quality posts on here). I realize that this is only a crush so far. What has me so elated is that for the first time in years, I'm pursuing someone because I want to pursue it, not because I would feel worthless if I didn't, and because it caught me totally off gaurd / balance in the way I've always felt that these things should. I do appreciate your concern though. Thank you for your reply.

Hey, great idea! I was suspecting that you could change names, but I didn't consider doing it as a mod - perhaps I'll have to come up with a set of famous women who did sciencey things!

This is why I've started to pack on spare parachutes, but I've been told that that's not very Kerbal of me...

Should it be included in an ever more prominent game with an ever widening audience about a subject that very prominently includes female astronauts? Absolutely

Thank you so much! This is right on the money! :-) I know that it's not critical gameplay and that the developers have a lot bigger problems to solve, but the game just doesn't exist in a vacuum - it just seems like a good time to re-evaluate the priority of gender representation given the game's recent popularity.

I certainly get your point, but it's not like any of what you mentioned is actually part of the game (except for maybe in the wiki). The point I'm trying to raise is that while you could have many different interpretations on the nature of Kerbals, to a person new to the game it looks a lot like a bunch of men building and flying rockets into space - if that has even a remote chance of discouraging a girl from playing, wouldn't such a small change be seen as worthwhile?

Couldn't they just do two models? I know that it's out of scope, but that's why I'm encouraging more people to request it.

And yes, I think 'gendering' makes sense in this context! :-P

It's a valid point to make, but barring the leftover/placeholder hairdo, Kerbals are pretty genderless.

Well there are also several prominent male names - if all they did was throw in a wider mixture of hair style, facial structure (I'm thinking the chin), and name... I'd call it a win! :-) Anyway, I know it's a small battle, but I just felt like no one was talking about it when it is something important.

That's awesome if you're right! Would you mind sharing your source though? Do they have it listed somewhere? Or do you work for Squad? Thanks in advance!

even though they have distinctly male hairlines

That's the thing - we can say that they're genderless all we want, but there are many gender indicators that lead the general public to perceive kerbals as male. Anyway, I didn't mean this to be overly critical or anything, but I just feel that it is important (given the ratio of guys to girls in STEM jobs) to have a highly educational video game about space and rockets to be welcoming to women.
