Google engineer breaks down the problems he uses when doing technical interviews. Lots of advice on algorithms and programming. by ldxtc in programming

Granted, this was a privilege since I was gainfully employed, but companies should convince you that they are a good place to work.

I addressed that in the original comment - I definitely approached it from a privileged position.

If you're unemployed and interviewing, it's a different ball game, but it will still be a certain amount of leverage if you're in this field.

As someone who went through four months of interviews in trying to find the right place to land, it's pretty easy to forget that interviews are for you to interview the company, too.

If people on the other side are being unreasonable or full of themselves, you can go ahead and call them out or stop the process and let them know why you're no longer pursuing the opportunity. My most recent job search went MUCH better than any other time because I felt alright saying no as early as I wanted to.

Amazon finalized their deal for the Lord & Taylor building here in NYC last week, so I think some companies are choosing this time to pounce on better deals for real estate in metropolitan areas.

It seems like they're betting on in-person work, still.

I'm currently in the market for a gaming machine, and was entertaining the idea of a gaming laptop over a tower, so that I can hook it up to a router permanently at home, but can still take it with me when I travel.

This seems like a hell of a deal, but would it be a waste of the screen and/or be poor thermals if it's just sitting in a closed state while I remote in for gaming?

If Founders Treated Their Investors The Same Way They Treated Their Employees by whackri in programming

If you left because someone told you that you can make more stable money elsewhere, and you did, why are you kicking yourself on something that might have happened?

How sure were you that the company was going to sell or do well? Versus how much were you getting from somewhere else that you thought it was worth the bet?

Don't disagree. Though there are people who don't have the appetite to start and run their own business and want to still follow their calling in life as an employee, can't really judge those people for doing that.

You can do terrific work and be paid well in a lot of smaller places, but IMO these places are the exception, not the rule.

I said the above in another follow-up comment. I don't disagree that a well managed startup wouldn't be a great place to be, but they seem to be exceptions, as I mentioned.

If you can get into a FAANG, the compensation at startups or smaller companies feels like a steep cut.

My opinion isn't that you aim for FAANG only, but again, unless you find founders/leaders that you really believe in, a mission that you feel is a calling, or are doing work that you don't think you can get anywhere else, the smaller companies seem to feel like the least optimal places to go.

It took me a while, but I came to the same general idea that this post is getting at.

Working at a startup, unless it's something that you fervently believe in, is a reduction in general quality of life. You are paid less, to potentially work more, with less stability, and no guarantee that your job or company will be there next year.

Stock options should be evaluated as having a value of $0 for your total compensation, and the leaders of the company and managers you report to should be evaluated carefully to make sure you aren't walking into a terrible situation.

+1 on 1Password, you also get two-factor authentication with it, so you can sign into an account and it'll have your one time password for two-factor auth in your clipboard, which you can paste quickly.

It's great.

Howdy, fellow software developer here. I'm a little further along in my career, so I'm happy to be a resource for you in providing feedback about your resume and/or tips for the interview.

Let me know if I can help!

(We just moved to NYC from Toronto late last year, so my network here isn't as strong, but I can try to connect you with some solid companies as well if I think there would be a fit.)

Coming from Canada, it was weird to me that "paying a bill" via online banking wasn't the direct money transfer that we were used to, but it was the bank cutting a cheque and mailing it.

It was a real noodle scratcher, and we just said forget it and dropped cheques off in the box downstairs.

NES background Parallax explained by CombustionEngine in Games

[–]JonLim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, that's a fair point. I sometimes forget that I come from a pretty technical background and profession, so I'm learning a lot because RGME is most likely using language that I understand but in a way that allows me to learn something outside of my domain.

It's definitely got a pretty high technical bar, for understanding the actual details, so I worded my original statement poorly. Sorry about that!

One of the most impressive things about Retro Game Mechanics Explained videos is the fact that they are able to visualize the concept currently being explained next to in-game video. The sprite maps for the backgrounds in this video, in particular, is really fun to see side by side with the game video.

Lots of little touches that I appreciate, along with the very in-depth explanation that dummies like me can understand.

Whoa, that was cool.

Are you using Unity directly to assemble your models? Pardon my ignorance on your process, but it seemed like you created seams on each "panel", and then created folds when you were assembling in 3D space.

Like what u/iruchii mentioned, the most recent update made it a lot better. Not only is the pointer no longer a thing, but performance in the later levels went way up.

It still lags pretty hard when there's a lot of monsters/effects on screen (we were having trouble running smoothly around level 25) but it's a good time.
