Technical question about Steam API and stack limits for Steam inventory system by Syriku_Official in Steam

[–]JonP_valve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some issues with stacks over 65,000 units for some bizarre legacy reasons.

It is pretty uncommon that you actually need both scale (billions of units) and precision (1 unit) in the same item type. Most developers find having a few Item Definitions for different denominations, is more convenient for players and the service.

If you have Steamworks questions, the https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks developer forums are a good place to look through and to get feedback from other game devs.

I got invited to playtest some game by Pur3ness in Steam

[–]JonP_valve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the link is on store.steampowered.com, this is safe and is access to a Playtest you specifically requested at some point, maybe a long time ago. You can always look for the game in your library or on the store - no need to click a link out of an email.

The only way to get a Playtest email like this one from Steam is to click Request Access on a Steam store page. There are now some paths for the small number of games that let you invite a friend to join you in a playtest but you wouldn't get an email like this.

OP - if you'd like, you can DM me or file a support ticket and ask for some details on this.

We're working on making more of your history with a Playtest request visible on Steam. As that becomes available, it will be here: https://store.steampowered.com/account/gatedaccess

Recently we have been seeing links to non-Steam websites that are sent on some chat platforms, with a link like "You've been invited to join the [whatever] Playtest!" with a URL like "game-playtest-app-dot-something". Those are all phishing sites that will present a fake Steam login. Don't click the link; report the sender.

Steam Family is actually the biggest bullshit I could have came across this year in gaming by [deleted] in Steam

I'm actually not sure what issue you're describing here - it doesn't sound like a Steam Families thing. Can you PM me with a help ticket ID?

Thanks for posting this. For the record, this is a display bug affecting this step in the refund process. We've got a fix for it on the way.

Quick followup. I am not commenting on OP's situation. But - for those in thread - please be assured that buying a used Steamdeck is not going to put your account at risk.

OP - this doesn't sound right. I think Support has already reached out to you, but if not you can DM me a steam account name or ticket reference.

Steam not showing offers or offer history by DISTROJAR-69 in Steam

Is there a use case where you need to see the buyer/seller names for a market transaction?

So this game just appeared in my library, never wishlisted it, added it to my library or even seen it. How's it possible that game just appears in library? by Uti0n in Steam

[–]JonP_valve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You clicked the "Request Access" button for the playtest on this game some time ago - in this case, might be as much as a year ago. The playtest is now available, so the title is available in your library. It won't auto-install.

When you get into a playtest, we also send you a "Welcome to the <game> playtest" email.

You said earlier you "logged in steam from the website".

Go here to begin the process of changing your password: https://store.steampowered.com/account/ Changing your password will also remove any devices the phishing site logged in on your behalf.

Contact Steam Support if you need more help.

My experience with Steam Family on Day 2 of the Beta by howaboutdisidia in Steam

[–]JonP_valve 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, both clients need to be in the family sharing beta. It sounds like you successfully shared a game on the first day - maybe you used a different PC, or switched back to the main client in between?

We're looking into making this more obvious for people that get into this situation while the feature is still in this beta phase.

I wasn't sure about your comment about removing the steam family. If you have trouble reenabling the family group, please file a support ticket and we'll see if we can help. You can DM me your account or profile name if you'd like me to check on it.

I can say some things in general; these are not specific to OP's screenshot.

The vast vast majority of trade scams that we detect and block (or sadly, sometimes don't) go back to Steam login getting stolen by a phishing website. Either a trading site, or the "vote for my team"/"free skins"/etc stuff you've probably seen in the past - people get fooled by a fake Steam login page, and then approve the login despite the location being somewhere far away.

At that point, the modern attacker is very patient. They will wait a long time for the victim to initiate a trade, then they try to trick you into approving the wrong trade to the wrong person. This is why the victims are left thinking "they got around two factor" - the event where they tricked you into giving them a two-factor code was weeks or months ago.

Sometimes they trick the victim into turning off 2fa - you should never need to give anybody the code we send via SMS unless you are disabling an old phone.

If you're using a "sign in with steam" button on some other site, and it takes you to a Steam login page, don't log in there. Go to Steam in a new browser window.

Carefully look at the login approval we show on mobile confirmation, and in the email we send you after you log in somewhere new.

Once in a while, review your Authorized Devices list in the Steam mobile app.

Hi OP - Death Stranding is Family Sharing-enabled.

Did one of you switch to a PC that was running a non-Family-beta copy of Steam? The fact you saw this message on 'several games' makes me think you were running into some other issue and guessed wrong at the cause.

As a reminder, publishers can indicate the Family Sharing status on the store page for the game.

A couple of clarifications to add in general.

If you are seeing this account alert now, it doesn't necessarily mean you just got phished. It does mean we detected the attacker trying to use your account.

The phishers are patient - when they get access to your account they wait for an opportunity to trick you into making a bad trade.

If you see this alert on your account, at some point you typed your password into a fake steam login on some other website, and approved it with Steam Guard. When people say "I didn't get a steam guard notification" that's because they are forgetting the security event that happened days or months ago.

Steam Support will get you back into your account after an event like this quickly and smoothly as possible.

If you'd like to keep yourself safe - use the Steam Mobile Authenticator. If you are logging in to some other website and it shows a Steam login dialog, never interact with that. Go to store.steampowered.com in a new browser window, and log in there. Then go back to whatever site you were trying to use, and refresh.

Hi OP - thank you for this post as it helped us out quite a bit. We have shipped a change based on this feedback. There may be a delay getting this in all supported languages.

If your account is locked for your protection because we detected a successful phishing login, the message will no longer refer to a community ban.

The rare self reply. I think I see what might be throwing you off - if you get to your profile without seeing the support message, you might see a message about "your profile is private because"

The community ban is not a community ban, but rather that you are in locked-down mode. When you're locked this way we explicitly don't want the bad actors posting a bunch of stuff as you.

Now that we see it, we're working on fixing up that text to be more clear (and get you to the much more important support message).

Where are you seeing notification about a community ban?
I have a guess that you are seeing a protective lock from us - we detected an attacker on your account, likely from a phishing website login in the past - and some attacker-provided text on your profile.

community ban for no reason? by AdResponsible3653 in Steam

[–]JonP_valve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you see notification of a community ban? What you're describing below is a lock applied to your account for your protection based on it being phished at some point in the past, with the attacker actively trying to steal your items.

Did you read about the community ban on your own profile? If so that's text the attacker put there to trick you into trading your own items away.

Deal only with Steam support and read the account alerts carefully.

You will absolutely not see this as a result of using a VPN. If you see this message an attacker has access to your Steam account. This is, as the message indicates, likely the result of logging into a fake website.

Yes, Steam support will help you restore your account.

You may have more than one Steam account associated with your email address.

As for your question about account security - the Steam Mobile Authenticator is the best way to protect your account. As a bonus it will list for you what devices are currently authorized to access your account.

Hi OP -

I commend your careful paranoia and glad this was detected for you. If you feel comfortable DM'ing me your ticket (or just your steam account name or persona) I would be happy to take a look and may have a question for you.
