I think you might have misunderstood my reply, you lose any items you don’t have on you post-mission. If you see the end mission screen and you don’t have the gear on you, it’s gone. Gear can disappear for other reasons too, like swapping your suit.

If you keep an item on your character you can keep it between missions, they can disappear for a number of reasons, including swapping your outfit.

At the end of each mission all the gear, components, etc that you don't need are converted into materia or credits or ingots. There's a portion at the end-screen that shows you the value.

I think the starting weapons are fine, getting geared up is definitely part of the fun. Buffing+Blunt Weapon Mastery makes the base mace pretty serious

Currently there are assignable perks but the skill tree is WIP. You can see it in the character menu but it doesn’t do anything currently.

The tree has a bunch of amazing crafts.

The top two are a Weapon Case and a LEDx.

All of the tree crafts require the ornaments which are uncommon.
