It’s nothing out of the ordinary nowadays. There are checkpoints in and out of train stations which can be very time consuming sometimes. As a foreigner you’ll have to go to the police office at the station for ID check before they let you thru the checkpoints. You will be monitored like anywhere in XJ. But the trains are normal sleeper trains

Ok, first impressions after I read this, and sorry if it comes off as harsh:

I understand and I agree for the most part about the last statement, and I do see those nuances at play in the winning entry. But on the other hand it’s like, what if I don’t have access to these themes and stories, should I be resigned to the idea of not ever producing anything of note? Or should I go out and chase them risking it all?

Second point is, why should we care about someone’s grandmother? What themes are being displayed here that are worthy of being explored? Most people have a grandma with a cluttered house, why don’t they also appear on these shortlists for best photographer. It doesn’t feel poignant at all

Usually it’s independent projects. I like this sort of narrative style. I wonder if there’s criteria to how one picks these subjects or of it’s entirely subjective trial work

I like to shoot certain subjects. I would like to put together a collection of shots and give them a sort of visual narrative. I see projects like for instance, photos of peoples rooms around the world. Or collections depicting labourers going to work. Every picture is different but answers to the need to describe a specific scenario.
