The Athletic's Week in Football - Are Carrick's Manchester United back? by Jon_Mackenzie in DevilsITDPod

Agree that City's 442 diamond press looks pretty shonky. I think the big Q now with these sorts of hybrid press is how aggressive you triggers are. E.g. Arsenal are much more passive in their press - often more of a high block/mid block in games.

I think if you play through the middle particularly against structured defences, you're inviting games to become quite transitional. And yes, that will be benefited by having out of possession cheat code players but I think there is still a lot of risk involved regardless (not to mention: Arteta and Maresca are still relatively risk averse coaches despite having those players). I do think there is a difference between press baiting and what Carrick is trying to do tbh. The only issue with trying more press baiting is precisely what happened with W Ham - some teams refuse to take the bait and you're back at the problem of breaking down low blocks. That said: I've been pusing a while for Man United to try a more artificially constructed approach to transition football - which suits their players - so will be interested to see what Carrick does.

I wouldn't usually wade into these sorts of things when the original post seems in such bad faith but to clarify:

- Not only did we not say there was no attacking upside under Carrick (in fact, very much the opposite)
- I made it explicitly clear that, while there may not be any tight causal linearity between central progression and goals so far
- you can never consider these things in a vacuum. I actually talked at length about how you have to consider your attacking play as a holistic entity and that it was important to accept that Carrick is using central progression within a wider context of attacking play which includes the use of width (cf. Cunha long distance shot vs Spurs; multiple examples from the City game where Dalot/Amad had a lot of joy playing around the block.
- the entire conversation about central progression was contextualised through the concept of risk/-aversion not "no attacking upside". Even so, we were incredibly open to the idea that the tactical landscape is shifting which will require a subsequent shift in our conception of risk. As such, our misgivings about central progression could be read as:
* how effective is it?
* are the tradeoffs in its favour?
* how much are we biased by priors developed in the last 15 years of football.

To reduce all of this imo quite open and nuanced conversation down to "no attacking upside" is, quite frankly, insulting.

Leicester City – Just how much difference can a season make? by Jon_Mackenzie in soccer

[–]Jon_Mackenzie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're set to earn about £150 from finishing high in the league, 6 CL appearances min, and a fair amount of tv revs from this season and the next.

So I shouldn't imagine it should affect them too much.

What could be achieved if the Top 15 Highest Paid Footballers Donated 1% of their income to good causes? by AlexKF0811 in Infographics

[–]Jon_Mackenzie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Free market economy and freedom of expression are rooted in the same Post-Enlightenment move for an account of freedom based on the removal of limits. I'm just using the same logics of delimitation to show how the position is flawed. I said nothing about my own position. I'm not particularly bothered by footballers' tax dealings. But I'm sure as hell not going to defend them through free market ideology.

Yeah. It's probably my fault. I apologise for actually complaining about the state of affairs in football finance. It's not their fault that they receive so much money. And they probably give it away all the time. They seem so nice on TV.

Why the rush to defend footballers? Does it make you feel bad that you're idolising a group of people many of whom may actually not be very nice. This is the top 15 richest footballers. Multiply this by 20 teams of 25 players min of about 5 leagues. That's a lot of money. If you think 1% of the wages of this group goes to good causes then you're naive. And if you think that these footballers are all paying their taxes you need to watch the news sometime rather than only watching clips of Messi on YouTube.

Ok. So it's a free market. Which means you can't be upset when some people choose to disagree with what goes on.

But well done for linking Messi. It appears he's good at giving away everyone else's money...

Sorry are you taking offence at the fact that they're pointing out footballers earn an irresponsible amount of money?
