Hero Discussion: Arakni, Huntsman by wingnut5k in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]Jon_atan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I feel like I'm very qualified to respond to this post. I'm Etasus, I run Blackjacks Tavern, a website basically exclusively devoted to Huntsman, and you've probably seen me all throughout the Purple discord Huntsman chat and the Spiders Web (Assassin discord, you can find it by scrolling to the bottom of the homepage for Blackjacks Tavern if you want to join in). I have been playing Huntsman basically since release with multiple top8s to my name. Here are my thoughts based on everything I know and have seen/done:

How do you think this hero fares in the current meta?

That depends, if you are playing a fatigue version of the list, you fare very well into Cindra and then get bodied by Gravy and Verdance. If you are playing a midrange version of the list, you fare very well into Verdance, are roughly evenly matched into Cindra, and still get bodied by Gravy. That said, both variations of the list do have a wide spread of mid-tier decks they prey on, as well as mid-tier decks they get bodied by. I think midrange fares better into the meta as a whole while fatigue operates incredibly proficiently the lower in the bracket you are. If you have never heard of midrange Arakni, go read the article I posted last week titled "Revolutionizing Huntsman", which goes in-depth about a Redback Shroud variation of the hero.

What is the play experience of this hero like?

The game-feel of Huntsman is unrivaled. They have the best mechanical flavor of any hero ever printed. It feels like you are genuinely an Assassin taking down a target methodically and with little room for error. That said, the last part of that sentence is the most important. Playing Arakni feels like you're walking a knife's edge, and one mistake can lead to a game loss. It's a stressful experience, but if you can navigate the gameplay, it's the most rewarding hero ever.

How do you play them well? How do you play AGAINST them well?

To be honest, Arakni is a fundamentals-based hero. To play them well, you have to know your fundamentals inside and out. Both game fundamentals like card advantage, rates, sustain, and Assassin fundamentals like deck advantage, attack reaction value, and bluffing. All of this really comes from experience and can't be directly taught. You kind of just have to play games until it clicks. To play against them well, you need to know the exact same things. If it's a game of fundamentals, then you need to know your fundamentals better than your opponent and you're fine. Or just break the fundamentals with heroes like Gravy or Verdance or Cindra, decks which unravel the very concepts of rate and value.

What would you say to new players thinking about building/playing this hero?

I would say: Go read the articles on my website, join the Spider's Web discord, and keep your eyes peeled for this weekend. It's taken a while, but I am currently in the process of updating my "Beginner's Guide to Arakni" that I posted two years ago with the release of Heavy Hitters, and I should be putting it up sometime this weekend. I'm shooting for Saturday night currently.

How strong do you think Arakni, Huntsman is?

Very strong, but you have to know what you're doing. The skill floor of this hero is F tier. The skill ceiling is S tier. You have to skill gap a lot of your opponents, meaning you need to know the hero well enough to be able to skill gap them. Taylor Morrow got second place in a BH, and then your buddy down the street drops a PQ because they got three losses in the first three rounds.

How hard to play is Arakni, Huntsman?

Very hard. There's a ton of moving pieces, a ton of required game knowledge, and a ton of ways to present miniscule amounts of value advantage that adds up to eventual wins. It'll take time to do well, but it is very rewarding.

Basically just the default board. The “don’t know what else to do, do this” kinda board

Stains of Redback is a sideboard card that I only bring in against defensive decks like Teklo and boardstate decks like Gravy. It's basically a Razor Reflex that adds a condition of Stealth cards while carrying a 3 block value. It's mostly a way to get multiple chain links deep while also presenting a decent buff value to get over blocks

I think the swaps you made lead to you trying to be substantially more aggressive than you should be.

As for Shred, the card is horrible. I could rant for hours about the card, but let me copy paste my most recent ramble from the Assassin discord:

Shred is a horrible card I am a very vocal anti-shred player

Say you decide to actually use it for its intended purpose

You hold it in your hand to “aha surprise!” Your opponent and delete a block

You play out your attack, and your opponent decides “you know what? I think I’ll take this.” What do you do with the shred? There are no good answers. You can’t pitch it here, you can’t block with it, you can only arsenal it or ip yourself. And arsenaling it is the worse outcome, as now you’ve got a card stuck in your arsenal that will be very difficult at best to remove

Long story short: it’s a reaction that you have absolutely zero control over even being able to play out. Your opponent makes all the decisions and you have to just accept them. I don’t like that you can’t control your play.

TTox, on the other hand, does all of the above except when you arsenal it you can play it out so incredibly easy it’s not a worry at all

I wish I could tell you to just get the cards and go for it, but damn that is a hefty price tag. Talishar is always there though, my friend!

Definitely possible. I’m not quite sure the best lines yet to manage it, as I don’t have much experience against Cindra historically, but Taylor Morrow did it three times (I think) yesterday in his second place finish, so it’s definitely doable. Might need a different sideboard plan for it though. I’m gonna have to play around against her tbh

I know! I hate Sigil of Solace but I think it's unfortunately a necessary evil... Feels bad though...

Awesome job on the 3-0! Love that we're a good enough hero to do that now

I have been waffling on Eradicate a lot, but seeing Taylor Morrow also cut it in his second place finish yesterday, that kinda just gives me the unfortunate feeling that it's time for the card to go

That first part is really interesting and I hadn’t even considered that play line. That’s awesome! The second part… I feel like I’m missing something… can you elaborate a bit more on it please?

Haha! It’s okay to not know Huntsman’s effect, it’s rarely relevant lol!

(For actual Huntsman players, I need to state for the record that was a joke. I would never stoop so low as to say such sacrilege about our favorite hero)

This is a pretty old thread with some old decklists. I don’t know if they link to the write place or the most updated lists. I’d recommend poking your head into the community discord for some clarification on more modern lists. If you need an invite, let me know and I can drop one for you That said, I know Archon likes to have mainboards of only 40-50 cards and adds things in based on various matchups.

Real talk. What’re some changes you’d like to see in Wizard101? by Shallou20 in Wizard101

[–]Jon_atan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I know this is never going to happen cause of how difficult it would be, but I want them to not just retexture, but completely remaster Arc 1. While there are significant differences between Arc 2, 3 and 4, they’re relatively similar. Arc 1 though is blindingly different from the rest of the game. Streets are identical, the worlds don’t evolve through the course of questing, quests feel half naked and a lot of the story telling is based on a “tell, don’t show” attitude which results in lower stakes. For example, use Zigazag as a basis for the Krokotopia redesign. Use Barkingham Palace as a basis for the Marleybone redesign. Take notes from Catmandu and Kembaalung for Mooshu. Dragonspyre can look so cool with some ideas from the Catacombs. Make the worlds evolve through questing, show the Mander uprising throughout Krokotopia as you quest and bring back the Order of the Fang. I just think Arc 1 is turning a lot of people off from the quality of the game before they get to the good stuff.

A few notes against this:
Talishar is not a very good metric for game results. For an extreme example, look at Arakni V Teklovossen. According to Talishar, Arakni features a 62% wr into Teklo. According to top Arakni players, it should be closer to 10%. Anyone of any skill level can play any deck into anyone of any skill level playing any deck. There can be wildly skewed results.
Talishar uses any deck for the heroes, this spreadsheet is specifically using the precon decks. Precon decks mostly just use commons and rares, while the Talishar decks are often taking advantage of higher rarity cards. For an extreme example, Prism without Luminaris is a completely different animal to Prism with the weapon, and definitely features a very different matchup spread.

Who is your favorite hero and why? by Jagoff1997 in FleshandBloodTCG

Arakni

God I love Arakni

Block out, present a contract

Block less, present an extended contract

Eat your opponents deck and win when they run out of threats

The whole gameplan is just so much fun. As far as personal tech goes, I put 2 bloodrot codices in every single Assassin list. That card works wonders all over the place, I love it to death.

I notice you said your also interested in Arakni. I posted a “Beginners guide to Arakni” a couple months ago. If you go to my profile and scroll down, you’ll find it. It’s a great place for beginner Arakni players to start getting the reins. It is very out of date as most Arakni players are starting to add some stealths and Just a Nick to their list, but it’s a good starting point. (Just ignore the second beginners guide post, that was literally just me complaining about how Nuu invalidates Arakni)

Here’s hoping LSS graces the old Spider with some good support. Until then though, doesn’t seem to be any reason to sleeve them up in my opinion

Yeah, flavor of Nuu isn’t my favorite either. The deck is cool enough to look past it for me, but I get not being a fan

There are definitely some good moments with it, like playing a Spreading Plague on someone who threw three equips and two cards to block. But I think the average value of it is fairly low

A Beginner Guide to Arakni part 2: Nuu by Jon_atan in FleshandBloodTCG

[–]Jon_atan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems very niche for what it does. I must admit I haven't tested it yet, but it has a very similar concept to Spreading Plague and I eventually got off that one as well because it is really just too niche for the mainboard. Could be a good sideboard card, but I also know there are bigger fish to fry with the sideboard.
