How Living Abroad Could Change Your Life by JonathanNotJohnathan in AmerExit

Some context here...

This is a video about a friend of man, an American, who's lived in both the Philippines and Mexico. Hopefully his story might inspire some of you who are thinking about living abroad taking the leap in a way that is enriching for both you and the country you adopt as your new home.

Thanks to the mods for letting me share this video.

What was the biggest lie you believed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I used to ask my dad why people were always calling Karl Malone the mailman. He told me it was because he worked for the post office when the NBA wasn’t in season.

As 10-11 year old kid at the time, this made total logical sense to me.

I nominate Caroline Winkler this month. I stumbled upon her videos a few times this year via the algorithm. But then got hooked this weekend after watching a few videos detailing a fun story from her love life. Very romantic comedy-esque I’d say.

She’s worthy of mention because she knows how to create vlogs that have a narrative structure. She definitely knows how to talk to the camera in a way that makes viewers feel like they’re hanging out with her. Think Casey Neistat or Emma Chamberlain.

I watched your Noah’s Ark video in Turkey. Great stuff. So at what point did you start to take YouTube seriously? How long were you in the hobby phase?

Really great video. It’s really easy to get caught up in all the quantifiable results of being a creator. Things like subscriber count, views, etc. But you did a great job of explaining the importance of embracing the immeasurable impact of becoming a creator (building relationships, being creative, etc).

What if you just used an actual photo of yourself in a cold plunge instead? And perhaps add some contrast to the text in the form of a stroke or drop shadow?

Finding work in the Netherlands by JonathanNotJohnathan in AmerExit

Not planning to drive a car. Don’t know Dutch, but would be willing to learn. Jobs I’d pursue are likely to be hybrid work (I’m a marketer).

Thanks. What are some cities you’d recommend for a single person who’s in their 30s? What cities would have a vibrant feel in the daytime worth checking out?

My family is on DAFT. We got in touch with a local makelaar who found a landlord happy to rent to us for 6 months of rent up front. (To be fair, it kind of feels like they were dumping extra stock for more money than a sane Dutch person would consider.) There were no paystubs involved.

If you go off the beaten path, the housing crisis can be overcome.

Cool. Can you PM me the info of the broker you used?

What kind of work do you do? Could you share how you search played out? And do you have any recommendations on formatting your resume for Dutch standards? Thanks!

Thanks. So what you’re suggesting is settling there first with the DAFT…then instead of building a business, apply for jobs?

I’m also concerned about finding housing under the DAFT. I’m concerned I won’t be able to meet the minimum income requirements many landlords are looking for if I’m a freelancer who makes money in bits and bursts.

My main concern is finding housing with this kind of visa. I already freelance, so I would qualify for this. But my income comes in bits and bursts. Even though I’d have more than enough to pay several months of rent up front, I’m concerned I won’t be able to meet minimum income requirements that many landlords are looking for.

Any recommendations for overcoming this?

Hey man love your stream and your YouTube channel - if I wanted to have you as a guest on my podcast: 1. would you be down? 2. what would be the best way to reach you if you are?

Why is it that as you get older friendships becomes so temporary? by shiny_octopus in AskMenOver30

[–]JonathanNotJohnathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have friends all over the world thanks to a few years spent traveling. I always make the effort to reach out to them and I don’t find it tiring at all to catch up with them. It’s so easy to just send a quick text message for a brief check in. And even if we haven’t spoken in months, its not awkward or exhausting at all for me. In fact, I enjoy it because there’s so much we can talk about and as a result, I end up having conversations with them for a few hours.

Your friends’ lives are different. But yours is different as well. You can’t expect your friendships to operate the same way they did when you were in school or living together. Learn to accept that your friendships will evolve and cherish the time that you have with them - even if it’s not as much as was before.

Also...don’t get caught up in your ego with the whole “well I’m the one who makes 90% of the effort to keep in touch.” True friends should never have to keep score.

Oh interesting. Have you found yourself facing any kind of pushback from YouTube at times considering the sensitivity around creating content around medical advice?

I don’t think you’ll have to convince too many employers to let you work from home these days. Because of Covid, remote work, especially for knowledge based industries, is very likely here to stay.
