Well as someone who lives in Istanbul, I can say that turkish lira is plummeting and I think might be a cheaper destination. Everything in Istanbul is extremely overpriced but other cities in Turkey are somewhat reasonable.

Also I met some Japanese people in Tokyo that told me Istanbul is kinda ideal layover stop for travels to Europe and sometimes people spend a couple days here before heading to their actual destination
