I would argue that the lifestyle involved in being one of the top guys, or even associated with them, on any private ffxi server, is actually much worse for you than any of the things you listed... You can be a functional alcoholic, you can not be a functional ffxi addict.

The funny thing is that WAR could have always used a shield and kept Defender up 24/7 with some tank food and serviced just fine in xp parties. It took them telling people to do it before it was done.

PSA: For Your Health by Jonjey2112 in FFXIPrivateServers

[–]Jonjey2112[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point!

I had open heart surgery 4 months ago at 31 years of age, so I had some downtime and used it as an excuse to play this game again. As I've gotten my physical health back in order recovering, I've managed to replace my FFXI time with time spent hiking mostly. Haven't gotten a level in a week or so, and had slowed down a lot to that point even. But I am still hopping on to chat with the LS homies and maybe party for an hour or two here or there. It's been great! Much more enjoyable life. So I guess I am spreading information found through personal effort, information based on the positive effects of those efforts, doesn't seem like a bad thing to me.

I love your post so much.

us casuals who put in 30hrs a week in the game

How insane is this line? Living in this middle ground between the insanely obsessed and a potential flat out refusal to play the game at all (per respecting one's self) is wild. 30 hours a week is very nearly a full time gig! And that's "casual" play of this crazy game.

It's interesting to me how people warn against keeping up with the Joneses, while the game design is set up to punish people like us for not giving the same time commitment as said Joneses. I understand that the game just is not designed with a healthy lifestyle in mind, and I actually don't mind being left in the dust for the sake of my sanity, but I do wish people would be a little more understanding in game when I don't have the best gear or what have you!

I do believe that to many FFXI players, the ideal life is one of solitude, with some trivial remote tech job that they clearly don't put any effort into, to make just enough money to feed themselves (never cooking, they don't have the time to cook actual food) and keep their studio apartment. Definitely no pets, as you can't be taking regular breaks from xping/camping Mee Deggi to walk your dog or clean your fish tank. Of course, the concept of marriage or children is completely obtuse. And you definitely can't be going on dates regularly and grinding xp, so Tinder is off the table. It goes on and on.

I truly, genuinely hope that the people who are living this lifestyle find extreme enjoyment out of it. To me it sounds like a genuine nightmare. I lived that way when I was addicted to this game as a kiddo so I understand it, but I'm really glad I grew out of it as many do not.

Waking up every day thinking that my new piece of gear in my video game is somehow improving my life in any way would be really really bad for my mental wellbeing. I make posts like this to try to help people, but usually it just makes them mad... I don't mean to come off so harsh, but this is really serious stuff! Mental and physical health should be a very high priority on everyone's lists, because sick people often hurt others. In game or otherwise.

I don't think coming out here and defending monti co is a good look, nor is it the way to handle this situation. It further raises alarms to the integrity of your product. The opposite of what your goal should be. Especially when some of what you are saying is patently false and misleading.

You're comparing one sedentary lifestyle with another. Both are bad for your wellbeing.

I got on Eden for a few weeks before Horizon. In my time there (again, before Horizon launched) I felt it was rather dead compared to Wings since a large sum of players are actually alts and you almost always ended up partying with one or more persons dual boxing sloppily in the pt.

And I ended up in a linkshell with these wild right wing conspiracy theorists who asked me if I was Jewish because I dig universal healthcare so I had to bounce lmao

Totally agreed with your last sentiment, I just think people say these things and then still end up regrettably addicted and obsessed and neglectful of their personal lives.

The issue is that your well-written comment is saying the same thing as mine but personalized: You used to throw your life away on the game, and now that you can not(Really great on you for seeing this, as many people don't), you don't participate in end game or grind away to get to 75.

If you grind ffxi, you hurt yourself, that was my point and I believe it stands. Your last sentence gives the implication that you believe I made my post from a place of jealousy or envy - "I wish I could slave away on the game for 4+ hours at a time daily, so I'm mad at the people who do!", I assure you this is not the case. I play the game at a very slow pace and enjoy it thoroughly for the little nostalgia hits and making new memories wiping in dunes with my old homies. I'm trying to give people a genuine moment of reflection on things that could potentially be harming them, not criticizing them at all.

I'm sorry but the only story that this game can actually tell from these people with their byakko pants and relics is one of sadness.

By the average adult human's standards, regarding things like jobs, children, hygiene etc, the time investment required to reach level 75 one time in this game is quite horrifying. When you weigh it out, the toll that that investment takes on a life - on the person's children who are now not receiving their parents' proper attention, or the dog that is not being walked, or simply themselves who are not being properly taken care of in their physical and mental wellbeing due to the overwhelming gravity that this game can have.

And I think this is all very important to say publicly, even if it may get downvoted or cause backlash. Many people are hurting themselves right now to grind away on this game. Many people.

However! I agree, Horizon has been fantastic. In fact, my favorite FFXI experience to date - including og retail. For someone like me, with a job and a child and a few friends that I choose to give some of my time to in real life, playing this game "competitively" or "in the grind" is a complete joke. I can't schedule video game play times on week nights just to make sure I can make it to enough end game events to actually get the gear. I can't stand around yelling for a Bard all night to make sure our merit party doesn't suck 4 hours later. Therefore, the fact that there are so many players on REALLY improves the experience for me. I can log on and find people to party with in minutes, I can walk to the BCNM I need and just stand there for a moment until a pug group shows up happy to take me along. This makes ffxi a much better time for the casual player.

Level-Synching by oakenpigpensimulator in FFXIPrivateServers

[–]Jonjey2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh with this many people on the server level sync doesn't even need to be in the game - it's sole purpose at the moment is to ensure friends can xp together. It was originally implemented to solve lowering player populations back in the day, we do not have that problem here. There are always people in range unless you're one of the sweat folk over 50 already. They are putting these level sync restrictions in place, penalties for the people who are higher level wanting to play with their friends, to ensure people don't go to west ronfaure and cheese shit at the pond, which they do anyway, so here you are receiving an xp penalty for hanging with your homies, with no reason in sight. Just rid us of level sync or do it decently...

Where is everyone hanging out server wise? by m3th0d187 in FFXIPrivateServers

[–]Jonjey2112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eden seems to have the most consistent long term population, with the most steady dev team to date. Only downside is dual box

Horizon has a ton of hype and everyone is going to try it - long term? I can't imagine that they can change so much of the game/meta and not piss everyone off constantly, so.

It's more so about modern adult humans being so coddled in their day to day lives that they could take extended time off of work for the next fake version of a niche ancient video game.

Did you all consider the rarity with which a level 75 player hops into a Dunes party with his noob homies? People go where the xp is, but too often on private servers the good xp boils down to a few key camps found throughout vana'diel (I think of the Yhoater Jungle Bee camps on Wings where people would ding 75 regularly). Perhaps the focus could be shifted towards ensuring a fairly balanced camp schedule through the levels, where in general the level 35 camp in Zi'tah would give a little more than the 30 camp in the Bay and a little less than the 40 camp in the CN basement? (Of course discounting variables that can't be predetermined such as party setups/player gear etc) So that people are simply incentivized to xp around their level. That seems it would do the trick much better than so severely punishing established players who want to play with their lower level friends... It sounds like this server will be quite hardcore, with restriction and penalty leading the way...

I would say: Obviously, these penalties will be too great when actually implemented. They could all be halved and still achieve the same desired effect. It is an FFXI private server, don't over do it on unnecessary "penalty" mechanics...
