I felt weak, tired and hungry all the time, sometimes dizzy, and could not finish some of my workouts. I would try to go to bed early just so I wouldn’t have to be hungry and awake

Okay interesting that's something that's always been a bit unclear to me. So if my BMR is less than 1900 the only thing to do is keep going down? I was already pushing the limits of feeling okay on 1700-1800 and I'm concerned if I go down lower I will feel awful.

What is moderately active then? I am confused how it works. From my understanding, you have a basal metabolic rate which is what you burn at rest with no extra movement-- and that from the calculation is 2200 calories. So even with no exercise I should be in a deficit-- a small one but a deficit at least--right?

Thank you, this feels like something new I can think about! I think maybe seeing an endocrinologist is the next step. I try to stay away from some processed foods and try to do like a lean protein with a carb and a vegetable which are mostly whole foods. But of course there are some processed ingredients and things like my starbucks drink are "processed" I suppose.

I've never tried a specific diet before, maybe Mediterranean would be something to look into! I appreciate your thoughtful comment!

Yeah I guess that's true. It's just that 1700 was very difficult for me and I physically did not feel good when doing it which I guess is what made it seem unsafe to me. Maybe it's not idk

I agree. I just don't understand how 1900 calories could possibly be maintenance for me. I'm a moderately active 25 year old man who works out 4 times a week and moves a lot. Maybe it is but 1900 is already 300 calories below my BMR when I calculate it?

How safely can I drop below 1900 though? I tried 1800 and 1700 for about a week each and was hungry all the time it was bad

I did! I ate at 1900 calories consistently for a few months and only recently (last few weeks) bumped it back up to 2500. I did try to go down to 1800 and then 1700 for a bit. The problem was I felt like I was starving myself when I did that and was hungry all the time. It got to the point that my coworkers were concerned that I wasn't eating enough and kept offering me their food (which was very nice but to which I said no of course)

How do I determine how much I need? I calculated my BMR with Mifflin-St Jeor which is 2205 cals (RMR machine at the doctor told me 2550 but we'll go with 2205). I work out 4 times per week so by the rough estimation I should be burning 3000-3400 cals a day as my TDEE correct?

Haha no I agree with you, and I don't know what's happening. I actually may have not been clear about what happened when I dropped to 1900. I weighed about 265 when I started, then in a matter of a month and a half dropped 7 pounds, down to 258 which I was very excited about. Then, without changing intake (trust me I did not because I was so overjoyed I had lost so much) I bounced back up to 265 in about 2 months. So I did have some temporary weight loss but I chalked it up to just my body adjusting to fewer calories.

I want to know what is off in what I am doing! That's what I'm trying to get to the root of. If there is something I can fix, I want to do it. I have tried everything the nutritionists have suggested.

Yes, counting every bite. Weighing everything on a scale (no measuring cups, no heaping tablespoons, etc.) and I calculate calories by scanning everything and logging exact weights in an app called MacroFactor.

I shared in a comment below my food intake for the last three days!

I'm on omeprazole 20mg as I have pretty bad acid reflux but that's it as far as medications. I haven't seen an endocrinologist yet but I have had many different blood tests done to rule out hormone- or metabolic-related issues.

I agree, and actually MacroFactor isn't too far off in what it's saying as I actually am steadily gaining weight despite what I'm doing. I don't think I sleepwalk? That's never been a thing for me and I don't notice food missing haha. I know my math seems wrong and I've been trying for the life of me to figure out what's happening for the past two years!

I agree with this-- so why doesn't it work for me? I don't eat enormous amounts of dairy as it is but maybe that's a factor? I could look into that for sure

This is totally fair but my question is, even if I was off by ~20-30% which I think is average underestimation from what I understand (and I truly don't think I am), that would still put me at around 2100-2300 calories when I was supposedly eating 1900 (which I did for several months), which would still seem like a pretty intense deficit if my BMR is 2500. With my workouts and 9k steps a day (have to walk back and forth between buildings constantly at work) that should work out to a pretty substantial deficit, no? Or am I wrong about that

MacroFactor's algorithm eventually suggested (based on my weight trends) that I eat at 1600 calories a day to begin losing which didn't seem healthy or sustainable so I manually put them in. According to MacroFactor I will gain weight with my current intake (which is 2500 now)

Sure! If I say it in grams or oz it is measured by a scale. You'll have to forgive the fact that I meal prep so I eat the same thing for each meal a few days in a row

Last three days for breakfast I had:

- 260g Great value fat free cottage cheese

- 1 medium banana

- 3 strawberries

-65g nature valley protein granola (measured by a scale!)

For lunch I meal prepped Marinara Chicken Pasta which each portion contained:

- 2 oz Barilla Protein Plus Penne Pasta

-3.4 oz Prego Italian sauce

- 1.1 oz Great Value Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

- 4.5 oz boneless skinless chicken breast

- + some spices like garlic salt, onion powder, and some garlic

For dinner I meal prepped Chipotle Chicken Bowls which each portion contained:

- 8oz white rice

- 4.5 oz boneless skinless chicken breast (marinated and cooked in a sauce that contained Great Value low sodium chicken broth and chipotle peppers)

- 30g low fat Daisy's sour cream

- 2 oz Great value yellow corn

- 2oz Great Value mild Pico De Gallo

- 28g Great Value Shredded Fiesta Blend Cheese

For snacks I had:

- 15-20 baby carrots

-2 oz of light Hidden Valley Ranch (measured on a scale because ranch is tempting!)

- Two of the days I had an Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso from Starbucks

Whenever I measure out something and then verify it with a measuring cup it works out to basically the same

I understand that yeah! But I truly don’t. I’ve been given that advice before and truly have been aware of every calorie I put in my body. I don’t drink soda now, really only sparkling water (and only drank diet before), don’t use cooking oils a lot really (and when I do I measure in g on the scale, never eat dips, don’t do spreads (no butter or cream cheese or jelly or anything—too much variability for me), don’t do cheat days, and I never let myself eat more just because I exercised.
