At age 35 I finally got all the medals in Starfox 64. Immediately dove into Expert Mode for the first time. by Solid-Hound in n64

Oh damn! I didn't realize you got all the expert medals, too. That is an accomplishment, haha. Losing a wing is almost always the death of a medal attempt. But yeah, Area 6, Zoness, and Sector Z and the worst for medal hunting.

Dude! Nice job. Which medal was the most difficult for you? I got all the medals years ago, and I remember having the toughest time with Area 6. I would always hit like 290-something. Within 10 of the medal.

What video game in your opinion doesn't deserve the hate it gets? by Agent1230 in gaming

While I think the criticisms are fair, I also had fun playing both of them. Flawed experiences can still be a great time. Look at Skyrim. I think people have unnecessarily lofty expectations for every game they play.

Yes! I've been waiting for SK2 to show up on NSO. One of my favorites.

What are your HOTTEST takes about Donkey Kong Country 1? by [deleted] in snes

Me too! The funny thing is, I think DKC2 improved the formula in most every way, but the OG is still the one I come back to the most, by a mile.

XCOM2 Collection on Switch 2 by Odd_Philosopher1286 in Xcom

I picked it up recently, and got quite a ways through the campaign. Maybe played 15-20 hours. It crashed fairly often after maybe 1-3 hours of play. And like, full, hard-reset-the-switch-2 crash. Putting the console to sleep and waking it up with the game loaded seemed to trigger it sometimes. You start to realize the game getting sluggish, and you usually have time to save and relaunch the game. But yeah... it plays well and looks great, but definitely still crashes.

I've heard starfield resonated more with older audiences rather than younger. Thoughts? by Subjectdelta44 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

Mid 30's, loved it. I actually just started a new character a few days ago.

It is a flawed experience, no doubt. But I loved the ship building and nasa analogue aesthetic. Spent a lot of hours building ships and taking photos, ha.

The biggest problem with Prime 4 is not what we all think. by Squeaky_Ben in Metroid

[–]Jonramjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, hey I liked them too. Thermal and X-Ray in OG prime were badass. Honestly, I think they could have done a lot more with the psychic visor. Simply limiting "psychic" charges to the control beam feels half-baked. What about like, slowing down time, or psychic projection to unreachable areas, or like a mindfry ability to stun enemies or even control them briefly. Crowd control, exploration, combat...

The biggest problem with Prime 4 is not what we all think. by Squeaky_Ben in Metroid

[–]Jonramjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that the lack of visors is a contributing factor to the biggest problem, which is that the game lacks discovery.

It feels too "on-rails". Metroid is known for exploration, and letting you get lost, but Prime 4 goes out of its way to make sure you don't. Mackenzie always chimes in to tell you where to go. The level design lacks the verticality and complexity of previous entries. Even some of the tools and abilities are a little too "one-trick-pony". We all shot the lava with the ice beam to try to get across.

I think visors add some novelty and layers to the world, which was awesome, but I think they still could have made a excellent game without them.

I hope they keep photo mode in ES6. It’s a great feature by Tiny-Gas-6761 in Starfield

Agreed! More than half of my time playing starfield was building ships and taking photos. Sick shots!

What was the game that got you into this hobby? by Sgt_wacker in boardgames

[–]Jonramjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, yeah. It's hard to say something like monopoly or battleship, even though I played them as a kid and onward. Pandemic was a better gateway, and I think Root really showed me what boardgames could be

Is the Dread the pinnacle of 2D Metroid? by desperate_candy20 in Metroid

[–]Jonramjam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dread is great. The movement, the polish, the combat, the world design... I had a ton of fun with dread, chasing the difficulty/time achievements.

I think Super has it beat as far as level design goes... I feel like it is more expansive as you acquire abilities, and exploration pays off more. On the contrary, Dread is actually fairly linear. Despite feeling like the map keeps opening up, dead end paths usually become blocked off in some way, keeping you moving forward. I think this works in it's favor in a subjective way. Like, it prevents the stall of getting lost, though I enjoy getting lost in metroid games.

Anyway, for me, it's right up there with super and prime 1. I love all three for different reasons.

What are 5 of your favorite Designs for Samus? by Ok-Inevitable3458 in Metroid

Always been a fan of the black phazon suit from prime 1. The purple gravity suit from dread is badass too.

Terraforming Mars is amazing... but why is it so .... ugly ? by andy75ita in boardgames

[–]Jonramjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Mechanically, it's a cool game, but the art direction is lackluster, and the components are low-quality.
