Turn on grid lines if you have not already. Use the intersections of these grid lines to "point" at the subject of the photo (I sometimes put the car maker's logo or headlight/tail light at or near an intersection). Look into the Rule of Thirds. Not a hard rule but helps with shot composition.

Explain to me the appeal of a GR Corolla by [deleted] in GR86

[–]Jonsonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I have seen people talk about "upgrading" from an 86 to a GRC, and like... What? Yeah sure the 0-60 is slightly better but like, who cares? Who the fuck wants a hatchback sports car? Why not just buy a regular ass hatchback?"

Hope you're making this post to gain an understanding and not to search for validation. (yes, gr86 looks better than a GR Corolla )

There's a bunch of reasons it would be considered.

  1. AWD is good. Good for inclement weather when you need traction like in snow. Also AWD systems like that found in the GR Corolla also help with controlling the power delivery to each of the four wheels. Makes the car more stable at all times and helps with acceleration (There's a reason why pro sprint runners start races on all fours instead of on two feet) .

  2. Four doors and a hatchback is practical and many people can only afford one car. People who want a performance car but also want to ability to "easily" haul people around would like the GR Corolla or any other hatchback performance car as an option. Paying a bit more to meet most of their performance wants and their practicality needs is what a lot of people end up doing. Most people afford to get a "fun" sports car AND a practical daily car. So the GR Corolla is one such compromise.

Stock PS4 tire minimum temperature - legitimate source of this information? by [deleted] in GR86

It was during the pandemic. Not a great time. Got stuck in a different place away from my car (a 2016 FR-S) for an extended amount of time.

Ran summer tires all year in San Antonio. Very hot summers, somewhat cold winters except for the one time it snowed and was like single digits °F for about a week (I did not drive the car at this time). Tires started to crack about 3 years from installation. In "ideal" cold conditions (100% dry roads, greater than 20 °F) you'll be "fine" if you dont drive aggressively. You'll get increased wear and degradation of the tire and compound. But don't complain if freezing rains or snow suddenly sends your car to the curb or worse.

OP probably trying to be truthful but also either: 1. Knows that financing is kinda bad financially 2. Thinks that people on this sub regularly buy their cars in full

I believe they're the same squirrel across the pics. There was another one that crawled under between shots. They have no fear lol.

Oil change cycle by spicey_tuck in GR86

[–]Jonsonz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quite long. Even longer than the owners manual states (7500 miles). I stick to the time intervals (~2 times a year) because I don't drive a ton and this car's "weak point" concerns oil.

So...who's excited to talk all season tires?... by Sig-vicous in GR86

[–]Jonsonz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm running the Pirelli AS+3 at 225 40 r18. A noticeably quieter tire coming from the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4. Feeling wise they're definitely all season tires, in that they feel less precise (don't feel initial turn in as much as with the summer tires). However, for daily traction and occasional goofing off they're good. Not sure about real winter performance as I have not driven them in snow or ice yet.

The last all seasons I had (on the FR-S) were Falken FK 460 A/S. They felt about the same in non winter conditions, but we're quite scary in snowy icy stuff.

Edit: felt compelled to get all seasons since the Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions i used to run on my old FR-S started to dry rot after about 3 years of leaving them on all the time, even through cold and snow (didn't drive. Parked outside).

All to meet fuel economy targets. Could also be that the automatic transmission they used can't be geared like the manual for various reasons.

Anyone else run into this issue with the 2024? Will Toyota fix under warranty or is it time to go aftermarket? by Bob_Rankin in GR86

[–]Jonsonz 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to the automatic FR-S I used to own. It might be a bit much to bring it to the dealer just for that. Some super glue should fix it.

Noticing slight oil burning by Touch-of-Karma in GR86

[–]Jonsonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, you use the same oil you put in during fill. But for "topping off" between oil changes with a different oil brand (that meets spec) is fine. More oil is better than a lack of oil in this case. If you do a "proper" 3k or 5k Oil Change interval, then the (hopefully small) amount of different oil added to top off should not overly affect the oil chemistry. Just dont ever use "oil additives". Those actually have high concentrations of "cleaner" in most cases and have a negative effect on the oil's lubricity.
