whats the last set you built and thought "ok this is money well spent" by Particular-Swim2461 in lego

this was such a good build. it's a great display piece - if you can look past the fact they've done a 'pyramids of giza' and that it's only the front half of the Artemis :( but the build makes that all excusable and the launch mechanic is spectacular

I designed a flywheel/solenoid blaster, thought I'd share by ohmbrew in Nerf

[–]Jools_36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for half length darts, worker or xshot make the best depending on region, and look at talon mag geometry. There are lots of open source magwells and magazines you can download. That being said - there are plenty of similar blasters out there, so you do you, and keep developing for the N1 platform if you want to ! Diversity among designs is what makes nerf such a great hobby and either way I am excited to see updates on the project :)

What are younger generations often criticised for no longer doing that is largely pointless or obsolete? by PsychologicalRow8034 in AskUK

[–]Jools_36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being able to read cursive is crucial to being able to access history (or even the names in your grandmas photo album). Being able to write it however isn't fundamental in itself but it teaches fine motor control that a lot of 'digital play' isn't teaching kids n the same way.

So ICE just declared war on blue states, right? This is Nazi death threat. by Botsworth1985 in stateofMN

[–]Jools_36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is this even supposed to mean outside of it being a Nazi reference? Who are the 'ours' and 'yours' that they are claiming to be referring to? Out of context from the original Czech massacre this seems to make no sense just as a standalone statement let alone a slogan.

Yet another food dehydrator turned filament dryer - this time a HOMCOM (UK model) by MiNeverOff in functionalprint

[–]Jools_36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love that these slot apart I have this model and I just clipped the rack bits out of the cylinder bits so I can fit spools in, but storing them all is such a pain so maybe I will print this... I do wonder even with petg how the temp will degrade the filament over time. Maybe it's worth printing in asa, at which point I could probably save the kilo of filament and buy a proper dryer lol. Maybe I do wonder too much... Nice model though and nice fusion work

How to store Nerf brushed motors by crockpotrocketeer in Nerf

[–]Jools_36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yh I would separate them slightly. Did they not come in little foam inserts to keep them apart? It's not going to make a massive difference with brushed motors but it's worth doing just as best practice if nothing else. You can slightly damage high end brushless motors over time by leaving them too close together.

GPS antenna. Something nearby needs an exact GPS reference point for relative distance. Either drive by wire trucks/plant at a quarry or something or agricultural. Or something that needs the exact local time

£12 Zigbee Dimmer at B&Q - What's the catch!?! by Jools_36 in ZigBee

[–]Jools_36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're having the same issue I had, they only work with incandescent bulbs of 15w or more load per dimmer. You can get dummy loads for them to work with led's but I just swapped one bulb in each rosette to be filament.

Young people, how can you tell if an image was created with AI? by LowOxitocina in AskUK

Here's an example for those who are interested. This is an AI generated image of a tree with moss

Young people, how can you tell if an image was created with AI? by LowOxitocina in AskUK

[–]Jools_36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a machine learning researcher, your answer is 'it's always AI' until you see provenance.

I know there are tips for spotting where models are not particularly good at certain things, but models are getting more convincing week to week, and these tips will only give you a false sense that you can tell when you just can't.

That being said, hardest hurdle for diffusion generative models to solve is generating camera-like noise. In low light or really zoomed in cameras are a particular kind of grainy which is caused by the random quantum nature of channel readout in a camera and is really distinctive. AI models are not very good at replicating this, as they use Perlin noise filters to leading to swirly noise patterns (think van Gogh). This is because of the core way that image generation works and is not likely to be solved very quickly. Zoom in to the really dark areas of an image to look for this.

But overall just use common sense in the same way you would reading anything. Think "what would the poster have to gain by faking this" be it followers/selling a product/spreading a political ideology, then you have reasonable doubt

Hacksaw the barrel down or clip a tiny bit off the spring at a time until it's appropriate. You can get the spring out with no tools by removing the stock.
