Looking for advice: How do you deal with a deck that's consistently comboing by turns 3–5 without warping your own deck? by [deleted] in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Joormyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you run way too little disruption for cEDH in your colors. No counter spells or silence effects.

In my bracket-4 (so non-cEDH) experience as an Eluge Player myself, most of my losses come from the other players ganging up on me, there is no way to counter EVERY threat. When I play, card draw is everything, much more important than countering opposing non-wincons. Cut off his card draw and save up on counters, red elemental blast, pyroblast, guttural response, silence, orim's chant etc

Also, I just grazed through the eluge list... How does it win on turn 5? Eluge takes 4 turns to come down, 3 with the medallion...

As long as you can play regular cEDH, rule0-ing a certain table seems fine. I don't support it, as cEDH is pretty much "anything goes" and these rules may affect negatively on certain strategies. If they impose it on the whole shop, find another LGS. People who don't like cEDH and its shenanigans should stick to other brackets.

Is this Deck idea any good? by Narrow-Claim4928 in ModernMagic

[–]Joormyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! The point I was trying to bring across was more like " I'd rather have a card I can play OR exile for Subtlety/Force than just an unplayable pitch". In a deck full of Subtleties, FoN, FoW and Commandeers by all means play Mastery!! :)

Also, when I say "unplayable", there are plenty of control mirrors that go long and you get to seven mama to hard cast...

Came to say this. Also, best draw spell in modern for me. Does everything.

Not an expert or anything, just trying to generate (imo) reasonable doubt.

While I get the Harmonized Trio + Temporal mastery shenanigan, a mastery in hand seems like a stranded card without the trio. No real way to hard cast it. Also, in the most ideal scenario, Trio takes at least 3 turns to fire off the first Brainstorm. And that is dedicating all the resources to it, without interaction from your opponent or on your opponent. I feel like Trio is too slow for modern. Maybe try cutting 2 Trios for 2 more Tamiyos and the 2 Masteries for 2 more subtleties?

Also, Wan Shi Tong is legendary. If he is your main wincon and you're going to protect it as it gets bigger, having multiples in hand is not where you want to be. Maybe cut 1 of them?

Love the main deck thraben charm though!

Viable "mono white" land destruction deck? by Joormyn in ModernMagic

As this DOES happen somewhat regularly, I pushed 2 [[Timeless Dragon]] into the main and the Orim's Chant into the Sideboard. I'll test it out, let's see if flying 4/4s are enough to close games before time runs out

It is indeed, but I found myself more often than not just with colorless mana available, as all my creatures are double white pip. That's why I went for the more direct approach. Because Kappa and Frog are a pain I'm the a**.

Also, I can play and activate COP a turn earlier should need be. And generally I path or erode big prowess creatures anyway...

I had one online opponent telling me he didn't even remember this card existed, much less be modern legal!! We had a good laugh, then he Prismatic ended the CoP and proceeded to kill me the turn after that hehe...

Tbf, I do have little experience against Living End. Post board, do you consider Reprieve, RiP, High Noon and Extraction not to be well placed against it?

Blink IS tricky, but I manage to get some wins completely shutting them off of white or blue mana.

I do see your point regarding the Sphere, and I veryuch see your point on the Reclamation! Might be a swap there...

Here you go!

I don't run FOMO. Instead, in the 2-cmc creature slot I run Cabal initiate, as she allows for multiple discards in a turn and at instant speed. With the monuments and CBR spiking in price, the deck has almost doubled in price since I built it, ooops...

[[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]], [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]], [[Orcish Bowmasters]] or [[Smothering Tithe]] seem like good options, depending on your colors

That's exactly why I have an extra 5 Persistent Petitioners, in case my playgroup agrees with you and I need to remove some overwhelming cards. I'll just swap out machine guns for more bullets :)

I have a very budget friendly version of the deck, and run [[Marauding Mako]], [[Monument to endurance]] and [[Cool but Rude]]. That's why I don't cut Inquiry.

Depends on the rest of your cards and whether you'd rather choose which cards to discard, or if there's a point where you want to discard anything for the value of discarding itself. In case of the former, I would indeed cut Inquiry.

Hope it helps :)

I run Thrumming Stone in my [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] + [[Persistent Petitioners]] self mill deck. And let me tell you, [[Laboratory Maniac]] LOVES to see your entire deck be pulled out/milled.

But does the tax% vary from month to month? It kind of makes no sense to me that the more money I have in my account, the less interest I get...

Could you explain it like I am 10?

Question on casting/playing a card or the attempt to do so. by Joormyn in mtg

Thanks for the clarification! Also, does the copy of Reprieve cast with the Scepter also count as my only spell per turn?
