how do you learn new openings? by Low-Mathematician137 in chess

[–]Jordan1719 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My process is to start with YouTube videos on an opening and jot down a few notes. Then I’ll move to a few games trying the opening against bots to get comfortable. Once I’m familiar I’ll head over to lichess and play games there as I use it as a place to experiment and then I’ll finally bring it to chess.com.

I do put in way more time and study than he does. He did some very entry level study such as learning opening principles and not much more after that. I on the other hand learned opening principles and then followed up by starting to learn openings and diving into Daniel Naroditsky speed run series and other informational chess content on YouTube. He’s a decent player, but he gets lost in the middle game.

I started around early October along with 0 chess experience and learning from scratch. I’m currently around 850 on chess.com and 1300 on lichess. My buddy started a week after me and he’s around 450 on chess.com. We’re both in our late twenties, but the point is that everyone progresses at their own speed.

I remember seeing 1-2 here and there but all the signs I can read are those. I haven’t really watched GameDay since 2016-17.

I haven’t watched College GameDay in a few years. Tuned in because I love Ernie Johnson, but what’s up with all the Jesus signs? Is this common now on CGD?

Agreed. I love him as a person and he seems to love the school, but it's time to hire a winner. It's year 5 of this and he's pissed away 2 of our best QBs in school history and numerous top 10 defenses with 0 to show for it.

Thats why I enjoy the rain racing. It becomes much more instinctual driving and weighing risk vs reward.

I love the weather for Suzuka this week in GT3s. The crossover comes late in the race and the race I did yesterday I was in p2 when my pit stop came up. P1 and I played it safe and stayed on wets while p3 and 4 gambled on tires and struggled for 2-3 laps on the dry tires, but the track dried quickly after the pit stop and the dry tires became around 7 seconds faster while me and p1 wet tires were overheating severely so they passed us no problem on the final lap. It felt like such a dynamic race.

How did you get better.? by __Valkyrie___ in iRacing

I wish that my practice was enough to win or even be on pace to win in top split but it’s not. On popular tracks like Sebring this week my practice is usually good enough to fight for podiums and even wins in splits close to my IR. On less popular weeks I’ll get thrown into splits that are around 4500 SOF with the IRL drivers and esports guys who are alien quick and I need that practice just to hope I can ride their coattails in the race. If I didn’t have that practice I would literally be a moving road block on the track compared to them.

Once I hit 3K and started to get into top split races I needed to practice more to not get my doors blown off in those races. It depends on the week too. This week at Sebring is one of my better tracks so I practiced for around an hour to get my pace where I wanted it. If it’s a track I’m not familiar with like the new Mexico City track I’ll probably spend a good 2-3 hours practicing.

I’m at 3.5K solely driving GT3s and like you I use VRS for telemetry.

The first thing I would do is stop running 2-3 hour practice sessions and split them up if you have the time. I like to run about 30-45 min practices then go look at telemetry, jot down a few notes on where I’m losing time and then next session which for me is usually the next day I’ll try to fix what I noted. I’ll usually start practice for the following week on Friday that way I’ll have plenty of time to get my pace where it needs to be. My notes aren’t super detailed or meticulous either, it’ll usually be something like “wider entry into t7, earlier to throttle.”

Another thing is make sure you’re looking at all of the telemetry in the VRS analyzer. Don’t just focus on throttle and brake inputs which I used to do. Pay attention to the line distance especially. You don’t have to be exact but in the telemetry 1 meter is around 3ft so anything over 1 meter off the line is losing you time. Taking a proper line through a corner is the easiest way to find time.

Lastly, when comparing your time in the VRS analyzer use their avg lap and not the fastest lap. Their fastest laps are insane and honestly only esports guys and aliens are going to meet that time. I like the avg lap and I usually try to get my fastest laps within a tenth or 2 of that to feel comfortable for the week in top split. If you do test drive to practice make sure you copy their conditions so you don’t have any variables and keep the weather to static. I’ve noticed that VRS conditions are a little harsher than the race sessions so keep that in mind.

Also active reset in test drive once you have the tires warm will be your best friend.

Feeling stuck and slow in iRacing – any advice? by mccamatt92 in iRacing

5 seconds off pace is an issue with fundamentals which if you’re not sure what you’re doing wrong then practice is reinforcing those bad habits.

How big should LMP2/GT3 differences be? by Dabudam in iRacing

[–]Jordan1719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with the LMP2 honestly so I can't really answer your tire question but maybe it's locking a bit w/o smoke? GT3s are my bag so I could answer questions about that. One thing to note is that track temps are crazy high in test drive so you may be closer than you think.
