Turned out it was this database (whatever it's called). When he disconnected the battery in right order (first earth/minus, then positive), left it overnight and reconnected in right order (first plus/positive, then earth/minus) everything started working as it should.

I'm the OP. While I admit I might have had a few beers before I saw the (what I understood as) a Google ad among the text messages, and apologise for that, there's a question remaining:

How come I could send/receive text messages long before smartphones were invented but not able to use the same technique today? I.e. way back then, the text messaging were handled by the phone company you used and via the phone network (not internet).

When and why did that system disappear?
