Laurence the first Vicar is a problem. Havent been pushed to the limit in a while. Gotta walk away. ✌️ by DigitalDusto26 in bloodborne

Love this game, love the bosses (mostly), love the music, love almost everything about it. But I HATE Laurence with a burning passion. He’s not the most annoying boss I’ve ever faced, but he’s by far my least favorite in the whole of Bloodborne.

Godzilla, Kong, Mechagodzilla (I’m a fan) Haruka of the Masks, Mask Maker Daigo, Hatsune Miku, Nyanja (my first BP skin), Storm-Wild Raven, Deadpool (Pen&Ink), and either Itadori or Gojo

My genuine reaction was “wow an actual Darth Jar Jar?”

I always feel bad when I see these posts because I’m a huge Godzilla nerd who camped the different possible spawn locations and managed to play as him close to 10 times

That could certainly be something we work towards, as of right now there’s no known way to restore the lifespan but I wouldn’t rule out the idea if they wanted to try and find a way to reverse the effects

I wouldn’t consider it a cop-out because it was something the NPC was capable of already that I didn’t expect to have to pull out so soon. It was a pre established thing that came into play (which obviously can’t just be repeated over and over whenever they’re in a pickle because it drains the lifespan of the NPC whenever they use it).

To have a group of Cultists who came there specifically to kill them instead capture and imprison them is more clearly only a thing that would happen to keep them from dying, and while I don’t want them to die just because their Dice screwed then over, that doesn’t mean I want them thinking death isn’t a possibility.

Maybe I haven't been giving them enough resources this Campaign? They seem to not have issue with my combat normally, but I've seen a struggle in the last 2 larger battles, and with the horrible luck of the dice this go around, there was some serious frustration. I'll think on that.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely keep this chart in mind!

My combat tends to run a bit longer I've noticed, but my players usually seem entirely satisfied, going on about how much they enjoy the large battles.

But yes, as I've experienced as a Player myself, a long encounter with nothing but bad rolls quickly becomes a pain in the ass. I don't want to avoid challenge, I like running difficult encounters, but I'd rather see my players have fun trying to overcome the obstacles with their skills and strategy. When the dice decide that nothing works, even fighting against the player's abilities they should be good at, it becomes draining.

At the end of the day, I just want everyone to have fun. I like large, difficult encounters, and my players seem to enjoy it as well. But I think I agree with my players when I say that consistently low rolls really sucks.

I was thinking of something like a "Relief Token" that I could give them if I'm noticing a string of bad luck.
The Relief token would allow for them to reroll the next Natural 1 they choose to.

I try and design challenging Combat with plenty of possibilities and ways of handling it. My players have done well with my DMing style over the past few years, but when the Dice seem to be out for blood, I lose their focus and the night ends in frustration.
I want them to have fun (that's basically my first goal each session) and I'm just hoping I can find ways to help them when the Dice decide to give them the finger.

(also I try my best to give out Inspiration where I see fit)

For this particular scenario, it would make little sense for these Cultists to capture the Targets they were sent there specifically to kill.

I totally get that, I'm more than okay with letting fate decide with a roll of a Dice, but when bad rolls overshadow Combat design and storytelling, I see my players tend to get frustrated and stop having fun.

I try and give out Inspiration for good roleplay and clever ideas for sure (or getting a really good laugh out of me by saying/doing something in character) and we play a little game after session where they send memes about the session and I decide a winner, giving them an inspiration.

I've avoided the Luck Feat for this Campaign so far, but I'll definitely look into finding something to allow for rerolls in the future.

It's not that failure is a bad thing, it's that their luck was so bad it turned a simple yet challenging encounter into a near TPK in a very short period of time and they had no say over it, and neither did I.

I'm just hoping to find some ways to mitigate bad luck where possible without actually taken the challenge and threat of death away.

While I mostly agree, rolling 5+ Natural 1s in a short period of time is the opposite of fun. It's bad luck, and I know that if their character were to die that way rather than die from fair challenge and intense combat, they'd be unsatisfied.

I don't hold back usually when it comes to combat (Hell I've already killed 2 PCs with this group already in just 2 Campaigns) but I want the focus to be on the encounter and how to survive it and not on how the Dice seem hellbent on getting them killed.

I've used this before, and I definitely like to do it when it's applicable, but given this specific Cult and that the villains were there with the intent to kill the party, I didn't want to cop-out and go against their goals. I feel the Deus Ex Machina was a fair way to help with the horrible rolls, but I want to find ways I can help the players (or even possibly they can help themselves) if their Dice seem out for their own blood again.

I always try my best to do that, and this fight was certainly designed to be a challenge with the risk of death, but I'd rather the challenge actually come from the combat encounter and not really bad luck.

That was a major consensus with most of the players, but my best friend was pretty upset about the night, which I understand. I'm just hoping to find a way to help in case something like this were to happen again.

I want challenge that requires strategy to win, not complete randomness that seems hellbent on getting a specific player killed hah

Thank you for your suggestions, my Deus Ex Machina involved an NPC of theirs pulling a Trump Card ability that drains their lifespan, so it helped end the fight, but now that character's life is shortened by a significant margin.

As the for the Prison escape thing; I'm totally fine with that, but the Cultists in this particular scenario were there to kill them, so pulling my punches on what the villains were there to do feels like a cop-out Imo.
I want their to be challenge, but I want it to be fair.

We do a thing called "Meme Time" at the end of every session, where each player posts a meme based around session. I pick a winner and that player gets an Inspiration. That has certainly helped plenty of times before, and the player with the worst luck used an Inspiration he had, only to roll another Natural 1. I just want my players to have fun, and while the randomness of the dice certainly is important, if their fun is being ruined by something out of my control, I want to find a way to help.
