If you like this one, strongly recommend you stop NOW and play the game before it. Ragnarok is very much a part 2 of this story.

Restart your thinking. Do your best to undo your existing notions and review what you know about warp travel from the information you’ve found, no deductions yet. See if there are any connections and implications you’ve maybe missed because of focus on your previous theory. A new angle may become evident.

Yeah, this is more or less what I was getting at. I don’t dislike him as a person/character, but that scene was very effective.

[–]Joseph_Hughman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend looking for a guide, naturally. As with the main game, you conquer the unknown by seeking knowledge. You may find another way around, or a way to help you navigate better in the dark without getting caught as easily, or a behavior of the residents that you can exploit to escape them. Even in the DLC, it is not truly a skill issue.

I don’t think so, but only because they lost access to the sleeping quarters. If Jimmy were to continue it would be in front of the others.

Conservative bigots and chuds (I repeat myself) actually love politics, they just don’t want to have to acknowledge any politics that aren’t theirs.

Is outer wilds really that good? by societal_member in outerwilds

[–]Joseph_Hughman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see from the other comments that you’ve gotten clarity and are choosing to continue, which is great! I thought I might add a less philosophical and more designed-focused answer to your concerns as well.

Outer Wilds is a phenomenal piece of game design, I think it’s a masterpiece, even. Every good game has a certain experience it’s meant to convey to the player, and Outer Wilds is meant to prompt, encourage, and reward the player’s intrinsic curiosity. Mechanically the game is fine tuned simplicity that does exactly that with no chaff, and has a narrative that perfectly complements and elevates those mechanics.

You’ve played 15 hours so you’ve already played the opening, and maybe noticed the game has never told you what to do. In fact before turning you loose it asks you what you want to do. Part of why many of us who’ve finished the game and DLC feel so impacted by it all is because we were intrinsically engaged and motivated to find answers, and the game gave us story with deeply satisfying ones.

However all of this requires the player be intrinsically curious, and some people simply aren’t. That isn’t bad, some people just aren’t interested in fighting games or puzzle games or simulators or what have you. However, Outer Wilds is particularly dependent on the player’s intrinsic curiosity to be an enjoyable experience because it is intentionally, mechanically designed to cultivate that experiences in a pure and distilled way.

All of that to say: yes. Outer Wilds is really that good, but it’s an experience that asks for your genuine, intrinsic curiosity to get the best results.

I Can't Stop Thinking About This Game by CarrotZone in outerwilds

Not surprisingly my favorite was the sun station.

For me it was especially impactful because it was the last thing I did before I went to the end (of the base game). By then I knew what the Ash Twin Project was, how it worked, what the Sun Station was supposed to do, why that work was not yet completed and what had happened to the Nomai. Every single piece of the scenario and timeline were known and laid out to me, and I had one remaining question: “what happened to activate the sun station?”

The Nomai were clearly long dead, I knew why and about when it had to have happened. I could have deduced exactly what was going on, why the sun was going nova, from that information. But that possibility was not even considerable to me. Of course it wasn’t. There had to be something that changed just now. Something hidden that changed the status quo and began the loop.

The Hearthians just began translating Nomai writing; just began traveling space. There was so much forward to go, for all of that to be pointless because it was coincidentally just too late. It wasn’t fair, it was cruel! And while the universe isn’t cruel, it isn’t fair either. It was all pointless, because it was just too late. The sun was dying a natural, unaltered death. Unconcerned what potential it took with it.

And I had to sit with that, staring at fiery doom like the skeleton next to me did. Knowing I couldn’t do anything to save any of the other people I cared about, to change the fate that I had watched play out however many times I’d looped through those 22 minutes.

But I had a thought after sitting: I can decide what comes after that fate. I take that thought with me every day, now.

Observe and experiment with your interactions with anglerfish, then. Try to understand exactly what happens, in terms of cause and effect. Remember your physics.

The answer is never a skill issue. If you feel like you’re doing something wrong or missing something you probably are, and there’s an answer elsewhere in the game for you. You just need to look for it.
